Hey guys, I'm looking to get some feedback on my first PC build. I will mainly be using this PC for gaming and running VMs for some malware analysis and pen testing after graduation. Before you recommend that Ryzen may be better suited for my needs, I would really need an explanation as to why that is, because I seem to be getting that alot, and I think it mainly to be a matter of pepsi vs coke at this point.

All opinions are welcome!

Since you're set on having that processor i kept it the same, but swapped that AIO for a better one that has a little bit of flare, put in rgb ram that can be controlled by auora. Swapped the 1tb hdd for a 2tb,Enthoo m imo looks and is a lot better. Monitor is exact same for a little less, different keyboard and also a mouse added that both have rgb

Hey Z06, thanks for the response, I have questions.

The Hero is dual Channel not quad, so why would you run 4x8 instead of 2x16 RAM like I had originally? I don't really care that much about the lights, honestly. I'm likely to rarely use them anyway.

I heard that WD Black is possibly the best HDD out there, and has a longer warranty than any other on the market.

Why did you change the case? Is there a size difference?

Also, i feel like the logitech romer-g keys are better than the cherry ones used on the corsairs. Those are old tech.

WD Black HDDs are good. Better than Seagate. As for why Ryzen over Intel at this moment, Ryzen offers performance that can't even be compared to Intel at this price point. Only loss Ryzen has is little bit less per core performance, but otherwise, Ryzen has more cores and threads by two fold. So it'll perform better in most day to day tasks. It lacks few FPS in gaming, within 5%.Unless an i7 7700k is all you need, the Ryzen 7 1700 in general is better.

Take advantage of all the dims on the board, WD black is not worth the premium tbh, Case looks a bit cleaner and has better cooling capabilities, i've tried both logitech style keys and cheery switches i personally feel that the cherry switches feel and actuate better

Overpriced though IMO. You can get a Kraken X61 for $125, or a Celsius S36 for $120.

Z06 wrote Enthoo m imo looks and is a lot better

The Enthoo Pro M is not a better case than the P400S. P400s and Enthoo Pro M are the exact same internally.

JollyGreen_ wrote I heard that WD Black is possibly the best HDD out there, and has a longer warranty than any other on the market.

It's stupidly overpriced. Just get a WD Blue or Seagate Barracuda, whichever is priced better.

JollyGreen_ wrote Also, i feel like the logitech romer-g keys are better than the cherry ones used on the corsairs. Those are old tech.

Cherry MX are not "old tech". Also, it's not only Corsair that use Cherry MX switches. Romer-G switches are like a mushier MX Speed. If you're wanting a keyboard for gaming, get MX Reds or MX Speeds.

XepherTheCat wrote As for why Ryzen over Intel at this moment, Ryzen offers performance that can't even be compared to Intel at this price point. Only loss Ryzen has is little bit less per core performance

So, Ryzen performance can be compared to Intel then, it's worse. Whether AMD or Intel is the better option depends on what OP is using his system for.

OP - Don't buy an i7-7700k. It's not a good CPU anyway, but Intel is releasing more information on Coffee Lake in 3 days, which will bring 6 core i5's and 12 thread mainstream i7's, wait for that.

I appreciate your input, thanks for the response.

Thoughts:

I've switched to a Barricuda 3 TB HDD instead of the WD, everyone seems to agree I need more space. I also switched to a 1000 PSU as opposed to the 750 that I had, and added a larger 280 mm rad with BeQuiet fans instead of the stock Corsair ones as they are quite loud. I changed cases to the Enthoo m because it has a larger air ventilation system in the front, and is a tiny bit larger in dimensions, leaving more room for air flow. In addition to that, the Enthoo m has a radiator bracket that is much easier to use I think than the other case. Also I don't need the RGB in the case, I wouldn't use it anyway.

Now, as far as saying the Intel i7 7700k "is not a good cpu".....based on what exactly? It's one of the best on the market, and arguably the BEST for gaming. Which is what I will predominantly be using this PC for. Sure Coffee lake is coming. Do I want to drop a grand on a new chip when four more will be coming out in the same year? Intel just spits out chips left and right, and you know the overall output performance of the coffee lake chips? like 15%. thats IT. 15% performance boost. They are claiming 30, but that is just a number to give manufacturers so that they will be ready when they come out, and as you should know is complete market BS. Saying the 7700k is "not a good chip" just because there is some other chip coming out is like saying that my 2017 Lexus is a shit car because there is a 2018 version coming out in two months.......

You don't need a 1000W PSU. 850W is more than enough for even SLI 1080Ti's.

JollyGreen_ wrote Now, as far as saying the Intel i7 7700k "is not a good cpu".....based on what exactly?

The fact that many people report temperatures of 90c+ under load, at stock speeds. It's just a 6700k with a higher clock speed and shitty TIM, so it runs hotter.

JollyGreen_ wrote It's one of the best on the market, and arguably the BEST for gaming.

Technically that would be the 7740x.

JollyGreen_ wrote Which is what I will predominantly be using this PC for.

"and running VMs"? Same old 4 core, 8 thread i7 isn't such a great option.

JollyGreen_ wrote Sure Coffee lake is coming. Do I want to drop a grand on a new chip when four more will be coming out in the same year?

A grand? For Coffee Lake? Since when? What are you talking about 4 more being released in the same year?

What? I've not seen claims of 15 or 30% performance increase with Coffee Lake. A 15% performance increase would be pretty damn good. Regardless, Coffee Lake is 3 days away from more info, and will undoubtedly be better than Kaby Lake. Plus, 6 cores, which will be beneficial for VMs, and even gaming since games are starting to optimise for more cores.

JollyGreen_ wrote Saying the 7700k is "not a good chip" just because there is some other chip coming out is like saying that my 2017 Lexus is a shit car because there is a 2018 version coming out in two months.......

No, it'd be like saying the 2017 Lexus is shit if it constantly overheats, and a newer, better Lexus for the same price would be available in a matter of days, so you'd be better saving your money for the better, newer one.

Well my ignorance aside, I appreciate the input. I have been working on this build for months and saved up around 3k for it so I just don't want to make any poor decisions. BUT it seems as though there are no perfect decisions. Every component of my build at some point has come under scrutiny from people who know better than me, and while i've been doing quite a bit of research about all of this, there is still much I don't know. I'm so ready to pull the trigger on this thing finally, and now just as I am, people keep telling me to just "hold on" because there is something new on the horizon. Well that will always be the case, but I suppose it's worth taking a look at. It should be noted though, that the new Coffee Lake will not utilize the 270 architecture, they've already stated it, and as such there are currently no Mobos that can run it. I know that will change very soon with the next gen stuff, but that leaves me with nothing to research if I wait for the next chip set, as ALL of the components are likely to change as well. I suppose by then, maybe Samsung m.2's will drop in price alongside 1080ti's. Here's hoping I guess. And RIP to the last six months or so I've spent putting this all together......

7700k as a placeholder for the i7-8700k which you should get. 6C12T i7 will likely be perfect for you. I'm willing to bet you'll get a Z370 chipset equivalent motherboard from Asus at launch. If not, you'll be able to get something good. Don't bother with the 960 EVO, I doubt you'll benefit from the extra speed. Extra $40 for more than twice the capacity in a fast SATA SSD(MX300). Swap the Meshify C for an Enthoo Pro M TG if you want.
