I believe the A2 means it has trouble detecting the HDD/SSD; which can also mean that your HDD/SSD either failed or came DOA (Dead on Arrival.) Since you tried clearing your CMOS battery and it still hasn't fixed the problem, you may need to try updating the BIOS for that motherboard to recognise the HDD/SSD if it isn't dead, but instead just having trouble finding it.

What motherboard are you using? Also is this a new build or this problem just started happening?

My MB is a Z77A-G45 I've just bought a new HDD from amazon and updated it. I can't get into my BIOS setting as the A2 error keeps stopping me from this (I think)

That motherboard seems to have that issue a lot, based off reading some reviews I'm reading, also seems to be the main motherboard when mentioning A2 errors. Do you have multiple HDDs or SSDs? If you do, try one at a time and see if they allow you to get into the BIOS at all. Seeing how you mentioned the new HDD you bought, try disconnecting that one and seeing if you can get into BIOS or even to your main desktop. If you can get into BIOS, try to update it or load the defaults, then plug the HDD back in and see if it will work for you.

Edit: Also try a different SATA connection just in case the port you're using on the motherboard or PSU SATA connector is shitting out.

I would first change the SATA port that the HDD is connected to on your motherboard and change out the SATA PSU Connector (even if it messes up your cable management, you can make things look tidy again later.) Once you switch ports and connectors, try restarting your PC again and seeing if it lets you get further than you have been.

If that doesn't work, remove your CMOS battery and leave it out for 10 minutes or so and put it back in. I know you already cleared CMOS, but let's give it another go.

Since this is your only HDD, if I'm reading that correctly, remove the HDD and boot into BIOS. If you get in, that shows that your HDD is causing the problem, which my guess would be that it is in fact defective since the motherboard is having a hard time recognising it.

If you have a spare PC lying around, you can further test this by putting that HDD into the PC and seeing if you get the same error.

Edit: already did first step lol
