My hdd is officially done in my acer aspire mini tower. Is there anyway i can install windows vista or 7 to a usb and use that as a hdd or would i need an official hdd ?

Yes you can run Windows on a flash drive using Windows Portable, however I would not recommend it. Read and write speeds of flash drives are garbage, and you'll notice a a major performance hit.

If you're waiting on a HDD but still want to use your computer, I'd recommend installing a Linux distro onto a flash drive. I use Ubuntu on my 32GB flash drive for work, and I don't have any problems.

You can find cheap HDDs on the market now. I bought a brand new 2TB HDD for £55 brand new, WD.

Like said above, I wouldn't want to run the OS off a flash pen, especially if it's USB 2.0 :p

You can get small capacitiy hard drives (<500gb) between $40-60. I wouldn't recommend windows running off of a USB.
