I bought my Stevens Savage Model 320 a couple weeks ago and I need to do a cleaning on the gun. I've shot quite a bit of rounds through it and I can see the black residue building up in the barrel. Is there anything specific I need to clean it and any sprays or solvents? The gun didn't come with an owners manuel, rip. any tips would be appreciated and will +rep.

Here's a pic if anyone has the same kind.

Buy a gun cleaning brush, you basically put it into the barrel and scrub and it cleans it up

Does the receiver or chamber need to be cleaned too?

I'm not too sure about that, I'm not very smart with guns, I'm sure you'll be able to find out on google or something

You'll need a couple things. First is a barrel / bore brush which looks like a brass brush (mainly because it is lol) then you'll attach this brush to a series of metal rods (brush is #3 in the pics below and rods are #1&2). The rods will attach into the handle (#19) and have some different attachments for different threads (#20). I bought a cleaning kit for multiple calibers that has the brushes as well as the rods for like $50. Anyway, once you do that then shove it down the bore but make sure the gun is unloaded and the action is open. Don't slam it down into the action as you might mes something up but just brush it for a while.

Then you're going to take off the brush and put on a plastic hoop piece (#21) and feed a cleaning patch (#24) through the hoop. Everyone does this part different, I will put it in dry and keep using that until it gets dirty then brush again then go back with the pads, etc. etc. Once very little residue comes off then I grab my Hoppes #9 lubricating oil and soak a cleaning patch in that and stick it down the bore and see how much crap that gets off. They do make another oil that loosens all the crap in there but I clean my guns after every time I shoot them so I don't usually use that unless I'm putting the rifle (say my hunting rifle) up for the season, then I want to make sure it's as clean as it can get and I soak a patch in the Hoppes #9 and just let the oil sit in the barrel until I use the gun next. Some people will use the cotton swab brushes, I personally don't like to but like I said everyone cleans their guns differently. I'm sure @Glock- could chime in a little.

EDIT:
You don't have to clean the chamber every time, it's mainly the barrel then every other time clean the action (good habit is just to clean the action every time). On a shot gun I would recommend say every 3 cleanings or so lube up the slide, the chamber, etc. etc. I use Frog Lube because it works flawlessly and doesn't smell like crap when you get it on you unless you don't like the smell of mint.

Buy the kit like above. Another thing that is wonderful is a snake bore that's flexible and will let you swab out the whole barrel of the gun. That's what I do when I clean my shotguns. Although with My AR I will just take it apart.

For rifles you need a bore string. Don't know if that applies to shotguns as well. Look that up.

Look up how to take it apart too, to get the individual pieces better.

Also find some CLP and do a light coat in the chamber.

A bore snake does work wanders lol. I wish I could take apart my Kalashnikov guns like you can an American gun.... Even though I'm an AK guy through and through I will say the AR's are a lot easier to clean.
