So here in the next few months i need a truck (since i got my license). I havent been shopping any because *screw buying new*. My dad threw the offer of me buying his truck he has currently for a good price bit the thing is i want something newer/smaller.

I would love to have a diesel (since diesel lasts longer than gas) and a truck big enough to haul 2 dirtbikes in but not be super long. I dont want stick shift. And i want something newer than 2000s.

Let me know what you guys find below!

Family owns dealerships, so I have been around cars all my life. Diesels are cool but man when they break you better hope you have money to fix them! I raced dirt bikes as well and I had a little GMC Sonoma 4 door and 4x4 to haul my bike and tools around. It did good, just had to drop the tailgate. And if you wanna spend a little extra cash and have a diesel you could always go with a chevy colorado diesel. They are a mid size truck and diesel which you'd prefer. I cannot tell you anything about the motor in the colorado tho but very nice trucks

yeah ive heard diesels to fix depending on brand is expensive. I really dont care tbh if its gas or diesel at the end of the day. Just as long i can find a nice truck that isnt giant and can do what i want it to. Thanks for the sugg.. ill check into them more. I have however looked at a few used rangers and a avalanche on craigslist but ive heard the rangers (depending on model) have crap motors.

I understand that, I would definitely look into rangers or a sonoma then. It is really hard to say which will be good and bad. I have learned that from the dealerships. Depends on how they were taken care of and sometimes stuff just happens. Luckily those two trucks are pretty reasonable to work on!

Price range?

The thing with diesels is that sure they last long... IF you take care of them. That's fine and dandy but the cost of owning a diesel is EXPENSIVE. I own a 2006 F-250 6.0 diesel, right now I pay $2.64/gal for fuel. If I had a gas truck I'd pay $2.33/gal. My truck takes 15 quarts of oil compared to 6-7 quarts of a gas truck. A standard mechanic charges between $85-$120 per hour (mechanic, not tech). A diesel mechanic you'd be lucky to find one that charges less than $150 per hour.

You don't need a diesel truck for what you're doing, you honestly don't even need a 3/4 ton truck. Getting 2 dirt bikes in a Ranger, S10, etc. might be a little difficult but possible. If I were you I would look for a 1/2 ton truck. 97-03 F-150's don't look the coolest unless you did what I did to mine, but they are super reliable. The Chevy 1500's with the 5.3l's are reliable, and the Ram 1500's with the 5.9L's are reliable. They are pigs but reliable. Trans, not so much. If you go to Ford and don't like the 97-03 style but like the 04-08 style, STAY AWAY from the 5.4L triton, they have a terrible design to get oil to the cam phaser and they blow up super fast. The 97-03 5.4L's don't have that problem, but if you want the 04-08 style go with the 4.6L.
