Developer: Insomniac Games
Publisher: Microsoft Studios

Genre: Action-Adventure, Third-Person Shooter

- Synopsis -

Sunset Overdrive is an open world third-person shooter which was developed by "Insomniac Games". It was announced at the "Electronic Expo 2013", and release worldwide in 2014. The game is set way back in 2007, In a fictional Capital called Sunset City. The player controls an employee of FizzCo, who has to fight off the OD "Overcharge Drinkers" - Humans that have been transformed into mutants after drinking the FizzCo energy drink.

In Sunset City the player's character can wall run, use zip-lines, and grind rails to swiftly navigate around the map, With a large arsenal of weapons. The game also has a cooperative multiplayer mode called "Chaos Squad", which tasks players to complete a series of missions with seven players.

- Gameplay -

Sunset Overdrive is an action packed adventure game! set in a third person perspective. Players navigate through the capital called "Sunset city" which is based in the year 2007.

At the start of the game, players have the ability to customise their characters "Gender, Body type, Hairstyle and outfit" Using the character creator. Players can also alter the look of their customised character at any point during the game by approaching a vendor named "Callista". After completing your character build you will then proceed into the open world, Which is free for players to explore at any given time.

A fast travel system is provided allowing players to reach different sections on the map much quicker. The game features a main campaign with story elements and side-missions, which are triggered automatically when players enter certain locations around the capital. These quests/missions mainly involve players delivering objects to other non-playable characters and collecting items from the world on the way.

Throughout the game, players encounter both human enemies, such as gang members, FizzCo's robots, OD'd humans who have mutated from drinking to much energy drink and several bosses who are more difficult to defeat when compared with other ordinary enemies.

The game features a verity of weapons for players to use against enemies. These include:

All weapons eventually run out of ammunition but do not need to be reloaded whilst you are using them.

- Controls -

The controls in Sunset aren't simple! By the time you have gained a full suite of weapons/abilities your hand's going to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger back in the 1980's. Saying that i did eventually get used to the controls of the game and grew to appreciate the huge amount of hand-eye-coordination needed.

For sure by the end of the campaign, I still found myself having to work to navigate this hand-eye-coordination Madness, When i had to grind on a wire, kill a horde of enemies below me, hop off, witch weapons and kill an airborne bat-thingy and then to top it off air dash towards the nearest bounding so i could wall-ride around it's outside.

Although it may seem like a bloody headache having the ability to master the controls and then being able to make it across the entire city without needing to set foot on the ground is pretty satisfying.

- Graphics -

The beautiful environment are engineered around the idea of gaming momentum as you jump, grind and slide around Sunset City. From a technical perspective some of the smoke and fire effects seem a little too flat, and most of the environmental damage is limited so it never feels like the chaos you are causing has a substantial effect on anything other than the enemies you are slaughtering.

There are some more subtle effects, such as glass windows in vehicles cracking and shattering upon impact, and surfaces taking on a charred appearance in the aftermath of an explosion.

Away from the combat side of Sunset, as your speeding past the scenery whilst grinding high up above the Capital you'll see the just how much detail Insomniac's engine can push out at any given time - building in the distance and other features are visible well into the horizon "Although you can't do your hair/makeup in a windows reflection from 1000 Yards away it's still decent".

Textures were hand-drawn to give the game a surreal, almost comic-book feel. Despite this, the team still manages to infuse realism into the game via "ASS" - Advanced Surface Shaders and with the help of the real-time lighting model.

- My Own Opinion -

For me Sunset Overdrive was the game i looked forward to the most! I've been a huge fan of Cartoon/Story Based Games for a very long time, In-fact ever since i started gaming.

When i first played Sunset i instantly got hooked to the game, spending hours and hours on it to grind and get the best gear possible! Many reviews out there will say that the game can be quite repetitive when your playing for long periods of time.. Isn't every game repetitive when your playing for long periods of time and grinding certain missions over and over again?.

My overall experience playing Sunset Overdrive was absolutely Insane! I wanted a game to be released that was not only Good looking with a good story line behind it, I wanted game that had all of that and something that me my friends & Family could have a really good laugh on. And believe you me we've had some laughs playing this game! and still do to this day.

Pro's:
- Amazing Story Line
- Great Laugh's
- Endless amounts of things to do
- Insane amount of detail
- Hardly any Frame Rate Drops! If any at all

Con's:

- Controls can take a lot of time to get used to
- Graphics are not the best in the world! But do look good
- There are some glitches that people take advantage of ( Like any other game )

Apart from those Con's stated above this game is a fantastic game in my opinion! and is a must buy.

- Ratings -

Gameplay: 8.5/10
Graphics: 8.5/10
Controls: 8/10
Overall: 9/10

I really agree with this review, you did a great job. Sunset Overdrive is super fun with loads of missions and things to do. Animated, colorful graphics make it appealing to the eye. I agree that it was a bit confusing at first but an hour or 2 in and I was having a lot of fun for the first time on Xbox one.
