So I'm helping my brother build a gaming laptop, and its been narrowed down to these two. Im open to other recommendations, but he doesn't want a desktop.

I can't tell if I missed the total price of the second one but if you are getting a 'gaming' laptop, you will want more focus on the GPU rather than CPU. An i7 is overkill, get a better GPU and dumb the CPU down to an i5.

Can't see the point in a gaming laptop myself, as you're gonna need external peripherals anyways...

Why not just get a cheap ITX build and save money!!

A gaming laptop is a terrible decision. Heat is an issue with laptops, and you still need a mouse and stuff anyway. If space is an issue, build mATX or mITX. $1200 would get you a nice little rig and some nice peripherals easily.
