Publisher: Electronic Arts, MTV Games
Platform(s): PlayStation Portable
Genre: Music
Players: 1

Synopsis

The first ever portable version of the popular music and gaming experience, this remix of the hit Rock Band features a number of features familiar to Rock Band fans and also makes use of the PSP's Wi-Fi capabilities as well as offers full access to DLC via the in-game store.

Gameplay

In this installment from the Rock Band series, you have to hit the notes when they line up with the bar at the bottom of the screen until you finish the song, or fail along the way. But there is a twist, you have to play every instrument, in every song by switching between instruments as the track designates which one throughout each song. There are four different difficulties ranging from easy to expert where the harder the difficulty, the more notes there will be with increased complexity and speed. There are also two different game modes to play, Tour and Quickplay, where you travel the world playing gigs and make money that give you the opportunity to purchase instruments, clothes, and band managers and in the latter you can choose any song you want and play on any difficulty. In the Tour mode, there are about ten cities you travel to and once you reach the end, you'll have to play the "Giant Setlist" which contains every single song in the game. You have to beat this in order to complete the game. There is also a practice mode where you can't fail and a beat-per-minute mode where you can test your drumming skills by keeping tempo by doing the same thing as you would in quickplay.

Graphics

The graphics in this game are fairly decent considering there really isn't much shown. The stage looks good, but could use some sharpness improvements (just like everything else), as everything looks blocky and pixelated including the characters, instruments, background, and cinematics. But you don't ever really look at any of that either. The only sharp and clear thing in the game is the fretboard, where the notes come down the screen as it should be since that is the game itself. Framerate also runs surprisingly well and there isn't any glitches making the game near perfect and very smooth running.

Controls

The control layout is quite complex here, though it may not be if you are a previous Rock Band player. There are five main buttons to press that will activate a note when hit, and the fifth note will activate overdrive, or star power. The triggers will also need to be pressed at certain times in order to switch between instruments so you don't fail the song.
