Game Information

Release Date: July 18, 1997
Developer: Kemco
Publisher: Kemco
Platform(s): PlayStation, Nintendo 64, PlayStation Network
Genre: Puzzle
Players: 1

Synopsis

Your fear of clowns has never been more warranted. Step into the (oversized) shoes of a malicious clown, setting out to inflict massive amounts of damage to the world around you. Your task is to blow up various islands on each of the game's sprawling levels, leaving nothing standing. You'll accomplish your missions by designing domino-effect patterns in your planting of various bombs and explosives, allowing each island to be destroyed with the push of a button. This original escapade features more than 120 levels of pulse-pounding action, boasting some of the most advanced strategic challenges you'll ever come across. Each puzzle is a few degrees more complex than the last, allowing you to ease into the experience before things get too stressful. With awesome graphics, original gameplay, and more explosions than any clown-themed game has ever dared to try, THE BOMBING ISLANDS might not help you conquer your fear of clowns, but it's perfect therapy if you hate islands.

Gameplay

The essence of this game is to solve the puzzle, or figure a way around the barriers (barrels) that block your path, to reach the explosive device and set the bomb whilst making it back to one spot where you will be safe. This spot has to be made by you moving around these barriers in a strategic manner. Each of these levels takes place on an island that is made up of boxes. So, if you can't create that one spot that will protect you from the blast, than you will get killed. With that being said, you only get one life, however, you are able to constantly retry them. There are about thirty levels throughout the game that each get more challenging along the way. At first there will be a few barriers that are movable and some not, some the blow up on contact, and eventually almost the entire island will be covered in these barriers or barrels.

Graphics

Considering the only thing you ever see on screen is the island made of boxes, your character, and the barriers, there really isn't many things needed to make it graphically amazing. The character you play as is pretty well detailed down to facial hair, the ocean that surrounds you also looks fairly decent with a few blocky waves, and the explosions are also fairly decent - the smaller the explosion (early levels) the better they look.

Controls

Being an extremely small puzzle game, the controls are the least complex of any in it's genre. The analog, or D-Pad if that's what you prefer, will control the characters movement. And the A button will set the bomb in it's designated spot.

Wow, I haven't seen this game in a long, long time. It's almost older than me lmao. Great review of a great childhood game, thank you for the throwback and giving it a rating it deserves.
