Synopsis

What separates the great games from the good games? There's an intangible aspect of making a game feel fun to play that can be difficult to pin down when trying to describe it, and even more difficult for a developer to create. But when a developer nails it down, it's truly sublime. Crossy Road [Free] absolutely nails how a game should feel, which makes it endlessly replayable, and my current go-to pick-up-and-play game.

Objective

The objective in Crossy Road is pretty straight forward, try to achieve the highest score. Now, achieving the highest score isn't as easy as it seems. There will be many obstacles in your way as you try to cross lakes, highways, roads, train tracks, etc in order to achieve the highest score and obtain a large amount of coins. As you become a master at this game you will be able to unlock more levels and characters that will make you want to keep on playing!

Gameplay

This game is very simple, but very addicting. What you basically do is try to cross roads, lakes, highways, etc and every step you take counts as a point towards your score. Now what you have to worry about are things such as vehicles driving by or animals swooping down to make you their dinner. All of these little obstacles adds enormous amounts of fun to the game and makes it hard to achieve a high score. I found myself playing this game for long periods of times and I had a great time playing it. This is a great game to play if you have nothing better to do or even when you are with your friends. I found myself comparing my score to others and competing with them to see who can get the farthest. This game runs smoothly on my galaxy s5 and I had no problems with it during my period of time playing it. What I especially like about the game is the amount of customization that they introduce to the players. At first I thought there was only one character to play as, but boy was I wrong. As you play you begin to collect and are rewarded coins at certain points of the game. With these coins you can purchase new characters that will not only unlock that said character, but potentially unlock a new level with it as well. Each level has its own kind of atmosphere that makes it really fun to interact with. The sounds in this game are nice and they did a great job with the noises that the people, animals, robots, and many more characters make. As this is a free to play game it was awesome that they decided to not bombard you with annoying ads while playing. In return you can simply watch an ad in order to get coins to buy more characters.

Graphics

The graphics in this game are awesome and very appealing. There is so much detail put into every map and character that it looks great. The 3D geometry and shadows makes the game look top notch as well. For a free to play app this is probably one of the most visually appealing apps that I have ever played and I am happy to have downloaded this game. There are also many options in the settings of the game to turn off shadows and reduce the frame rate to conserve battery life which is great if your phone is about to die or your phone can't run the game properly. I haven't experienced any problems with lag or frame clipping yet and it has been a great experience overall.

Controls

Throughout the game I didn't have that many issues with the controls. All you really do to move is either tap or swipe which is really simple. I had no problem playing this game with one hand which is good if you are multi-tasking. I did have some moments where my touch or swipe was unresponsive which ultimately led to my death. This game is very easy to get into and I recommend you try it out.
