Synopsis:

140 is a challenging minimalistic platformer with abstract colorful graphics. Rhythmic awareness is required to overcome obstacles controlled by an energetic, yet melancholic electronic soundtrack.(Courtesy of Steam)

Gameplay:

So this is one of the games That I regret playing, but yet at the same time Im glad I played it. Its one of those weird feelings that I believe is associated with the fact that I beat this game so I didn't feel like I wasted my money on it. But let me get back to my review of the gameplay. 140 has a very strong resemblance and play style of The Impossible game while at the same time behaving extremely different. It is not as frustrating as the impossible game, Don't get me wrong as you progress this game does get ridiculously annoying, Yet it is still pretty frustrating when it comes down to the core gameplay. The objective is simple, Collect floating spheres and bring them back to a "Bank" type area and it will cause a new theme of colors and beat to begin on the level. But there is a catch, To get these floating spheres you must first achieve/progress through a set of obstacles which can range from Super easy to unnecessary extreme level of difficultness (Don't even think that is a word)

I found that as the level became harder it would either become a good and effective challenge or just plain out unnecessary like I stated earlier. However though I do like how the level plays out not only to the them of the colors but also the beat. As you change themes on each level the beat will change/speed up as well. When these changes occur you can expect new obstacles/ Change in obstacles among the level to appear or begin to move (Such as platforms), and TV static will begin to lace surfaces which you need to note will kill you character on touch. Another annoying and interesting thin to the level design is sometimes the spheres you need to collect or platforms will disappear and re appear as the background beat occurs, For example: when there is a bass note a platform/Sphere/ Or even the TV static will move, disappear, or Appear based on the rhythm of the beat. Which I found to add challenge and complexity (especially when the platform became a trampoline and would launch you to your death if you didn't play it smart) to the levels which is a good thing considering there's only about 3 levels and you will spend 20+ minutes on each one. So I guess you can say that the level of difficulty is necessary for a game such as this.

Now I would also like to go ahead and note as you move left, right, and Jump your character which is original a square will change its shape. For Example: As you move left or right your character will morph into a circle and when Falling Up or Down your character will become a triangle (I know I said falling Up, GET OVER IT), your chracter will even have a Tail looking trail following behind him/her as it moves. Now one thing I did find as a + to the game, and probably extremely necessary, is the fact that the developer added checkpoints. So unlike The Impossible Game you will not have to restart the game from the beginning every time, (I probably wouldn't even be able to write this review if that was the case.) To activate these checkpoints you must simply cross it (It sticks out of the ground and looks like the trail that follows you when you move) and when you die you will spawn back at your most recent checkpoint.

Now this game was quite enjoyable for about 20 minutes, but after those 20 quite enjoyable minutes I feel a strong sense of agitating repetitiveness and the beat, The beat changes but at the same time remains incredibly dull and repetitive. I found when you received the sphere to change the theme and beat this was the only time the game would stop feeling repetitive, but I found this feeling probably only last 10 seconds and that's as your character floats up and the beat drops. This was probably the biggest turn off for me, I understand this game is simple and isn't suppose to be complex and instead offer a difficult challenge to the player, but I found that even after a while the feeling of a difficult challenge disappeared as well and it as well became a boring repetitiveness feeling as the rest of the game. But in simple this game is fun for a while but trust me it will become very boring soon enough. I did though like the fact you are required to listen to the beat if you wish to progress or become successful in the game, but I wish the beat wasn't so repetitive and repeated itself every 20 seconds. However if you enjoy games like this and don't mind the repetitiveness then this game could possibly be a good experience for you.

Graphics:

Before I write my review on the graphics I can assure you it will be no where as long as my gameplay review because there isn't much to the graphics and there is nothing close to revolutionary featured in them. But anyway (You must be thinking I abuse that word so much, GET OVER IT!) the graphics in this game are Simple, Basic, and could probably cause severe eye strain to some/certain people. Now I will go ahead and tell you this, There wont be to many pros about the graphics so Im going to go ahead and get them out of the way. So I found that the environment was extremely well done and clean (THANK GOD IT WASN'T Glossy.) There wasn't anything fancy and in no way where they grainy which if you read any of my previous reviews I don't like it when graphics are grainy or to glossy. Now I was also pleased how in the background the rectangle or what ever you call them move with the rhythm and will spike up with the beat, Kinda like one of those things you see associated on speakers or in dubstep thing. I don't what it is called so please don't hold me on that.

Now It's time to start on the cons of the graphics. I found that after a while the graphics became quite bland and extremely boring, even when the color theme and rhythm changed or speed up. I felt that for levels that lasted long period of time this is an extremely big issue and quite annoying. Now let me go ahead an state that it is quite pleasing to not only the eye but the brain when you progress to a new level as the design and overall scheme dramatically change and I felt as if this was 100% necessary, but I felt as if they did not do this enough. I feel like the developer should of made the environment drastically change on each level at certain times instead of on different levels.( I mean come on there's only like 3 levels) Now I also found the the Static that would attach its self to surfaces and jump around at times caused severe eye pain in my case (I have weird eyes and small things like this can cause issues with me) and would make my experience even less enjoyable than it already was. This sadly will have an effect on my rating for this game.

Now i'm not going to rant on and on about this game because I'm pretty sure no one came here to read my entire review so I will just get to the point. The graphics are clean and appealing at first but become bland and dull not soon after you begin playing, and can soon become quite annoying. But like most of my reviews, Its not up to me what the graphics are like and in no way should my opinion affect yours. So below I have added a few examples of 140's graphics so you can decide for your self if eventually these graphics would become plain and simple to you (Note that you will be seeing these level designs for most of the level).

Controls:

Now just like the graphics contained within 140 the controls themselves are even simpler. Now I use to believe if a game has less than 8 controls then there is no possible way there should be any issues with them. Well I found myself completely wrong. Now you might be wondering what I mean, and im going to get into that right now. Its simple you use the arrow keys to navigate the environment left right and up. Now if you don't feel like using the up key, Which I actually found quite annoying and awkward considering the speed and accuracy needed to jump at certain times, you can also use the space key. Now when using the space key I felt an urge to use the W,A,S,D keys to move and use space to jump up. I felt as if this configuration would have been the best bet to have as the default controls. Now one thing that pleases me and also makes my argument above completely invalid is that when launching 140 you are asked to set the texture quality (unnecessary in my opinion) and resolution, now there is a second tab for controls and this is where I changed the movement to the WASD keys and Space as my main default configuration. After changing the controls from default to my preference boy did I find that a more natural feel to the movement awaited me. Besides the more comfortable feeling I received when using this configuration I also found that my game play and skill within the game its self also improved significantly and I was able to complete the more demanding/challenging moves with ease.

Now don't get me wrong the controls are entirely based on personal preference and you could possibly disagree with me 100%. But once again this is my opinion and with the few other people I know that have played this game agree with me. Now you may be asking why do I have issues with the controls if I can simply change them my self and never have any complaints with them at all. Well I happen to be a control snob and when it comes down to games I like to review the base controls, I feel that base controls are what the developer intended for people to use to play the game and so I find that reviewing the unedited/original controls is a necessity when reviewing any game. Now you may disagree with me on this, in which im sorry, but this is my opinion and I felt as if 140 could have a significantly better vanilla experience if the developer used WASD as the movement keys. Now the only way you can be sure about the controls are if you tried them for you selves so please don't let this be your sole judgment on the game.

Personal feedback:

Now there is probably a huge probability that most of you read my entire review (I'm kidding no one probably read the entire thing) so Im just going to sum it up now: 140 is a good game, Don't get me wrong, But its one of those games that just isn't for me. recently Ive been trying to expand the genre of games I play and it seems that as I expand games get worse. I discovered the main reason why I sticked to the same genre for years now, Im not meant for games especially platforms or puzzle games such as this. But don't get me wrong I have enjoyed these new games I have began to play and I have quite enjoyed the experience. But anyway back to 140: The game is Ok, But it gets to dull and boring to fast. I find this to be a major con and will be a huge factor into the score I give for this review. Now don't get me wrong this game may be amazing to some people, but that wasn't the case for me. So if you want to know if this game is right for you I would do a little more research then basing your purchase of this one single review, Because like my mother always said I know Nothing (Kidding). But I will end it here because your probably already tired of reading my review so yea I guess this is the end.

Gameplay: 5.5/10 (It got to boring to fast)
Graphics: 7.2/10 (They where clean, but they got dull to fast as well)
Controls: 7.0/10 (This would be higher if the vanilla controls were better selected, instead of me having to change them myself)
Overall Rating: 6.5/10 (sadly Yes, But I guess this makes a good "Ok" Rating)
