Gameplay:

So since it was announced The Forest has been on my most anticipated list and when I released I couldn't wait to buy it. Now This game I particularly don't know how to feel about it. I really don't know whether its good and or bad, personally I dont like alphas but this game I was going to make an exception for. well when I first played It everything was fine and smooth but the bugs. Oh god the bugs are horrible. There is so many and it just pains me that they released this game with so many. However I felt that when this game worked it was AMAZING! I mean, the few times I managed to play without encountering bugs I had so much fun. A few times I was able to play for about 4 hours before encountering any bugs and then I would go flying across the map and dying... The perfect way to end 4 hours of enjoyment. By now how ever many bugs have been fixed and I believe the forest is now at a playable level especially since my games can now save so I dont have to restart everytime.

Anyway back to the gameplay when the game does work: So when the game did work I found it to be extremely Scary and exciting. You never know when a blood thirsty cannibal is just going to hop out of the bush and destroy you before saving your progress. This element always kept me on edge, forcing me to save as many times as possible and trying to keep my effigies lit at all times (These are used to aid in keeping cannibals from your base). After a few days of building I had a strong feeling of pride knowing that I had finally completed my base and had a better chance of fighting of the cannibals. Which is good to find in a video game when you feel pride in completing an objective within the game. Besides this the forest is the perfect survival game, You start off after your plane goes down and crashes on an island inhabited by an indigenous cannibal tribe with only food, electronics, alcohol and a Emergency Fire Axe you are tasked with surviving as long as possible,The forest allows you to construct the basic objects needed to survive, and allows you to use your environment to craft your base and supplies(Cutting down trees and using the logs to build your first shelter and things like that) However the environment can be annoying at times, With seagulls constantly flocking to your every location, and once you kill one hundreds more come and begin to harass your hard earned base. The game also has sharks that you need to watch out for when you explore along the beaches searching for supplies at the boat or if your daring enough to attempt to escape (I tried, You cant).

Now I found death to not be as punishing as in other survival games like dayz, instead of always loosing all of your items when dying (or breaking your legs and having to crawl for 3 hours for morphine) There is a small chance you will instead be abducted by the cannibals and will respawn within their cave, where you can either scavenge for supplies, Escape, or maybe look for some "Mutants" within the cave systems. While progressing through caves you do have a lighter to use as a light source or if you have a flashlight you can use that as well. Now don't get to cocky as sometimes you will not be so luck and you will just straight die and loose all progress between the time of death and your last save. But really the only disappointing thing about there forest besides the bugs is the lag of content/craftable items. you could craft few weapons (such as Molotov and explosives) and build basic structures, but at this time you cant really do much more than that (Their are slots to furnishes your bases which will hopefully come out soon). I hope as the game grows and ore people buy it they continue to add new content as they are now,I mean I would really like to use a bow and arrow or any other weapon besides a woodcutting or fire axe. But as far as the gameplay goes this game is Amazing, But only when it works. If it dosn't work its not good, its like playing the first build of Dayz that the Devs dared not to release. But If you can get it to work you will have probably one of the greatest experiences out their to date.

Graphics:

When the trailer for this game came out when it was announced, I saw the graphics and automatically I myself called BS, and did not believe it looked as good as they showed it. Boy was I wrong, I mean they arn't the best graphics you will find in a video game but for being created in unity they are amazing, I mean it has modern AAA graphics using an engine such as unity (I know its powerful, I've used it before but this is the first example I ve seen to properly use its power in a real experience and not some Tech Demo). Once I first loaded the game after its extremely long load time, and finally left the plane and entered the forest I was put into a state of awe. The environment is extremely well created, the textures are amazing (Until you get way to close to them) and man the water is beautiful. How ever let me just say this the Navmesh is not the best, it has an "Ok" Navmesh but its not good. Hopefully they will improve on this as the game progresses through the alpha stages. Anyway back to my original discussion: The graphics are simply amazing, especially if you have the proper hardware in your pc to max out all the settings. With the settings maxed out walking through the forest the light shines through the trees and bounces of the ambient surfaces of rocks and other plants within the environment to create a very very pretty scene, kinda like walking through a "Dream" forest or something that can Not be found in real life.

Now don't get me wrong theres some bad graphics as well, for example the ground textures are pretty bad, but their ok as most of the ground is covered with grass. Now one down side to the environment is how glossy everything is. I mean for god sake do these cannibals soak in baby oil for 24 hours once a week, I mean god they have some shiny bodies. There is a thing such as good gloss, bad gloss, and Just WAAAAAAAYYYY to much gloss. This game has way to much gloss to its models, even the mud and dirt is glossy. But other than that the graphics are still amazing besides this offsetting property. I found that the interior of the caves is also well designed(except for the gloss) and they can be quite peaceful and elegant until a 6 armed mutant monster abomination comes out of no where and then just complete and utterly wrecks you. But anyway the lighting from light sources available to you is also quite well, especially the glare from the flare and how it lights up the smoke created by the flare. Now I don't want to go to fanboy on the graphics and make this extremely long as my gameplay review so I will finish up by just stating 1 more point and then my explanation. The models: The models at time can become extremely buggy and Its hard to explain so I will just give you one example. The Ultimate weapons, The Cannibal Leg fire axe, Literally what It sound like they cannibal leg with have the fire axe combined with it and this will create a very weird weapon that is quite and eye sore. But then again this is a bug so I won't hold this against the game to much.

Despite any bugs I mentioned near the end involving the graphics or my complaint about the glossy material, The graphics are still simply amazing. I find they are elegant and pleasing to the eye for the most part. But then again my opinion shouldn't be the deciding factor for you so I included a few basic pictures below so you can decide what the graphics are like for yourself.

Controls:

The controls for this game in my opinion are going to be as basic as you can get for a game this complex. I found this fact to be quite enjoying, as I didn't have to learn any new controls while being hunted down by Cannibals. the only new thing I really had to learn was how to light my lighter or turn on my flash light, other than that I was quite please I could basically interact/pickup/or place all my items using E. Probably the only control I found annoying was the rotate key, I feel as if this could of been binded to the scroll button on the mouse, but instead it was bound for R. I mean it would of been easier to use the scroll button to rotate because on a few occasions I accidentally planted the schematics for a wall I was building when I meant to click R to rotate it. But then again this problem could involve my keyboard as my keys are pretty close together so I guess this issue is mostly dependent on your keyboard. But I still think this could of been bound to a better button.
Other than that I found the controls all to work as I expected and that they were perfect for what they did. I believe this game probably has had the best controls in a game that Ive played. Now I was disappointed in the movement though, I felt as if the character was moving properly as he should of been, but once again that could be an issue on my side. However the sprinting did upset me and was not on my part. I felt he should of been able to sprint faster than he did, but this could always be tweaked at a later date. But to basically sum up the controls: They are excellent and they are bound properly, and I think Endlight studios did a good job at configuring this. Surprisingly this is the first game I have reviewed that I really haven't had to many issues or complaints about.

Personal feedback:

So by now you should already know what my views on this game are. ITs amazing, especially when it works. When it works its on top of the world, It could probably be one of the best games i've played in a while. But when it doesn't work I feel the same frustration I feel when I try to play Dayz. But I don't want to say to much now as this game is an alpha, But Im pretty confident that when this game is finally fixed and the bugs are eliminated it will be one of the best playing and funnest games I have ever played. When that day is, I don't know but if I could see into the future and I found the date, I would anticipate that date even more than I did this game. But In the End Im not to disappointed and glad I got this game.

Gameplay: 9.5/10 (Would be higher but the game still has some game breaking bugs, Luckily bugs don't affect me to much)
Graphics: 9.8/10
Controls: 9.9/10
Overall Rating: 9.7/10 (I wish I could of gave this game a 9.9 (I refuse to ever rate anything 10/10) but at this moment I just couldn't convice myself to do so. The game needs work and untill then It will have to stick with the 9.7)
