Synopsis

Super Meat Boy is an independent video game designed by Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes and developed by Team Meat. It is the successor to McMillen and Jonathan McEntee's October 2008 Flash game Meat Boy. Super Meat Boy was released on the Xbox 360 through Xbox Live Arcade in October 2010, on Windows PCs in November 2010, on Mac OS X a year later in November 2011, and on Linux in December 2011 as a part of the Humble Indie Bundle #4 and in May 2012 as a part of the Humble Indie Bundle V. Players control Meat Boy, a red, cube-shaped character, as he attempts to rescue his girlfriend, Bandage Girl, from the game's antagonist Dr. Fetus.

Story

The basic story of this game is that Super Meat Boy loves Bandage girl (his girlfriend) but an evil scientist named DR.Fetus is jealous of their love and has grown bitter and mad that he cant have Bandage girl. So he does what he thinks is right and steals her, yep he totally steals her from Super Meat Boy and Meat Boy being the great boyfriend he is goes on a epic quest to save her from DR. Fetus's evil clutches. Even with Meat Boy catching up to them both in every level he is only met with disappointment when DR.Fetus punches bandage girl and teleports away with her to the next level but between you and me he doesn't get away with it trust me.

Game play

This game is in my opinion, perfect the colours, the sounds and the graphics all perfect. This game is deceitful, starts off nice and easy once your out of the tutorial world it becomes so difficult difficult to the point were numerous you-tubers and players have broken keyboards and xbox controllers out of anger. This game has a hit box around Super Meat Boy just like any other game however this game is sensitive by a single pixel there are quite a few levels were you will die by literally one pixel hitting a blade. Keeping the difficulty in mind it makes the game so much rewarding when you complete a level, some levels I spent half a hour trying to complete and after I felt like a gaming god for doing something quite simple. I'm not going to lie I raged at a few levels in the dark world which I will explain now. After you finish a level on par time you will unlock the dark version of the level which is much much harder and these levels need to be finished to achieve 100% and help you unlock more characters which may help you in later levels as they have different abilities. To unlock characters you have to collect bandages (I assume bandage girl drops them) after you reach a certain amount you will unlock the characters however these bandages are hard to get some require you to think fast as they may be in a area in which you only have little time to collect. You are also able to unlock other characters by beating a 8bit style game boy game which you find in portals which are time based if you don't find the portal in the level quick enough it disappears.

Graphics

The graphics for this game are quite appealing to me and I feel it fits the style of game well. its 16-bit Esq yet still has a crazy amount of detail, some examples are in the second world you are in a hospital and the obstacles are needles, the measurement lines on the side are clearly visible (screen shots below). The cutsences however are not 8-bit and are much to what you would expect out of a modern game ( I will show in video below). They are all smooth and if you look closely you are able to see which pixel was hit by a blade when you die, as you can imagine this can cause a lot of anger knowing that its only one pixel that stands between you and Bandage girl but you will keep trying and you will succeed.

Controls

The controls are super simple for this game, you move with the left stick and jump with the A button, you are able to speed up and run by pressing RT and many of the levels require you to just the RT. Some even make you throttle to complete a task such as getting a key. Overall I think the controls are very well suited to this game as its already hard enough without a complex control system. So as you can see there isn't much I can say about the controls other then what I have said and that they are smooth and that I couldn't think of better controls for it.

Additional Information

This game should have a warning on *prepare to rage*

I got hours of fun out of this game and still have not finished it, the final boss takes FOREVER.

Achievements

There are 12 achievements to get ranging from unlocking characters to finishing multiple levels consecutively without dying.

I don't see anyone completing this game in less then 4 hours and less then 10 for 100%. If you want a hardcore game to test your gaming skill this is it, you will get mad, you will rage but its worth it for bragging rights.

Overall Rating

This is my (trovi) personal opinion

Story: 10/10

Game play: 10/10

Graphics: 10/10

Controls: 10/10

Overall:10/10

*Personal note I love this game despite the anger it made me feel XD*
