Synopsis

Fez is a two-dimensional platform game set in a three-dimensional worldd. The player-character Gomez lives a peaceful, two-dimensional life until one day when he watches the breakup of a giant golden hexahedron tear the dimensional fabric. He receives a red fez hat with the revelation that his worldd has three dimensions before the game appears to glitch, reset, and reboot. Subsequently, the player can rotate the view-able 2D worldd 90 degrees left or right about four sides of a cube, revealing four 2D views of a 3D space. Fez's puzzles are built around how the environment interacts between these views. When a level rotates, distant platforms materialize and new paths appear: broken plates become a solid road, ladders missing sections become whole, traveling platforms stay on course.

Story

There is not much of a story to this game, but I will try and explain the little I found out of it. The man that Gomez gets his fez from is part of a group who ever couple of years give a new fez to a new person who they think can save there worldd. Once they have the fez that person must then save there worldd from becoming torn apart, to do this they must collect all the cube fragments and make the large cube again. I feel that this story although simple fits well with the game and I don't think it could be improved in anyway shape or form.

Plot

The plot for this game is pretty short and simple, Gomez awakens and you gain control of him. Once you step outside his home a man sends a letter to you via a tube asking you to meet him. When you have climbed to the sop of your town he gives you a gift, a magic fez it then gets put upon your head and you are teleported to another dimension and spoken to. You learn that your dimension the 2D world is in fact 3D and is in danger of breaking, To Fez this you must collect fragments of cube to eventually build a giant super cube. Through your journey you are spoken to by a tesseract who offers advice, but once you complete your adventures he has to leave your dimension. Although you lost a friend you saved your worldd and got invited into the fez club so it's not all bad is it?

Game play

In this indie/arcade game you play as a little guy called Gomez, he lives in a 8bit 2D worldd. You begin the game in Gomez's room, he awakens and you will gain control of him once you step outside a cut-scene will begin. A man wearing a fez and eye-patch sends a letter to Gomez via a tube system which works using gravity as the letter slips down the tube the camera follows the tube but allows the player to see Gomez's small town. The letter informs him that it's time to meet him you then climb his little town making your way to the top you can interact with other members of his community, when you reach the top the man gives you a magical fez (hence the games name). After you receive the fez you get teleported to a new area and there is a large isometric cube above you, it begins to tell you something but in a made up language. After it has finished it bursts into fragments, you learn the knowledge that your worldd is 2D however in a 3D realm, you are informed you can turn the worldd left and right. This new function is the way you navigate round the next several areas to gain fragments of the large isometric cube that told you the information.

After what was mentioned earlier you wake in your bed but still wearing the fez. You go outside and a tessaract (4D shape)begins to tell you that to proceed into the next area you must collect enough fragments to create a small cube. Once you collect your first cube he explains that doors have engravings on and each engraving tells you how many cubes you need to have it open, from here on the general idea is to collect as many cubes as you can and open a large door. There is one more thing i should mention, for every cube there is a anti-cube these however are different to the fragment cubes, these are a different colour and are not found in fragments you must solve puzzle's some of which are quite hard. Speaking of puzzles there are also hints around the areas to get secret items such as a skull which will unlock you a achievement/trophie, these hints can be seen right from the start however some of them you may have to finish the game to see as you unlock another ability which is to see the game through 1st person.

My opinion on the game-play and story

I feel like this game is a one of a kind piece of work truly a unique idea, The game plays smoothly and the transition from one side of the worldd to another (turning from one face to another) makes the game even better the detail in this game is perfect. During your adventure you will see this detail I mentioned, occasionally you will see animals such as worms and frogs crawling along the grass, even the ruins and buildings has carvings etched into the stone. As I mentioned the puzzle's in this are quite hard some may require a good 5-10 minutes just to understand the general idea of the puzzle's let alone do it. Keeping this in mind I still think this game is amazing I genuinely feel that other then the super hard puzzle's its the perfect puzzle/platformer I got hours of enjoyment playing it, one last thing before you read the next section the music in this game is calming and tranquil you often hear the sounds of your surroundings for example while in a woods you hear owls, or while on a beach/jungle/ruins you will hear the ocean so overall a nice touch to add to a already amazing game

Graphics

The graphics are in my opinion are one of the most beautiful 8bit style artwork I've seen for a game, such intricate detail for such small things like the artwork carved into a rock may seem simple to begin with but then becomes much more complex as you get into the more ruined areas of the game. The way the game switches sides (side 1 to side 2 etc) allows you to see the 3D aspect of the 2D worldd and in doing so you may see another island in the distance, you can easily see the intricate work even on simple things like trees and grass. I mentioned a 1st person view earlier, to unlock this ability you must collect enough cubes to complete the game, on your second play-through you will get magic sunglasses. In my version of the game (xbox 360) you click the left stick and it activates the first person mode, during this mode you are unable to move but you can move the camera to see things you may not have seen before. It may sound confusing but I will show some images below of both views.

Controls

The controls for this game are very simple you change views left being LT (xbox not sure for PC) and right being RT (xbox not sure for PC). The transition between each face (face 1 etc) turns the 2D worldd isometric into a 3D worldd then back to 2D, this happens with about 2 seconds so its very fast, I haven't seen the game lag once due to this mechanic. Movement in this game as a character is smooth and very easy to understand move with the left stick, cant get much simpler then that can you ? The only other controls are the A button to open doors or speak, the B button to skip speaking and left stick click to go into 1st person mode, while in this mode you can move the camera via the left stick to see the enforcement.

Additional information

This game was made by a small production group, the designer is named Phil Fish he is also the founder of Polytron. The programmer is named Renaud Bdard, Phil found him on a website called Deviant art. The music was composed by a man by the name of Rich Vreeland also know as Disasterpeace(stage/development name )his background is in chiptune-esque style of music, he worked on the soundtrack to fez mostly at night for around 14 months

Fez was first announced in 2007 as a indie game, in 2008 Fez was nominated for two awards the game also won a award later for "Excellence in Visual Art". Later that year he received a Canadian government loan to open Polytron Corporation as a start up company , then he began full time work on Fez, in 2009 Fez was announced to be released later in 2010. They kept experimenting with new ideas to make it even better but the company ran out of funding and turnt to family and friends for financial support and even considering canceling the Fez project but later received funding from Trapdoor. After it was released it went on to win many awards.

Engine used is called Trixel

Acievements/Trophies

There are 12 achievement/trophies in this game I myself have still not gotten all of them and I have played this game for a good 15+ hours. You may have to consult a guide to 100% this game, I feel like this is a good game to have in the 100% collection for your gamertag/psncard/steam ID.
