Synopsis
Kratos, the once mortal warrior turned ruthless god, sits atop his throne on Olympus as a threat far worse than his predecessor Ares had ever been, striking down anyone who crosses his path or the path of his beloved Sparta. The "Ghost of Sparta" sets out to alter that which no mortal or god has ever changed. His fate. Facing mythical characters, all bent on preventing him from reaching his goal, Kratos' journey brings him to the very edge of the Earth. But this is Kratos, and his defiance is filled with such arrogance and contempt that all of the ancient world still trembles at his name: Kratos, The God of War.

Gameplay
The gameplay of this game is somewhat similar to it's previous installment, with the third person still sticking around, as well as the gory hand to hand combat, with the combos and platforming making a return as well. Also, (not all but most) enemies within this game either come straight from Greek Mythology or are closely modeled from it. Some of the cinematic combos make a return to the second installment of the God of War series, as well as almost doubling the amount of bosses that you fight within the game. It is also good to note that not only did they keep platform elements within the game, but they made them quite a bit harder, you must run, climb, jump, swing, etc to figure out some of these brain busting puzzles! The game features two types of puzzles, simple and complex; simple can be moving a box to be able to jump on it and then up and over whatever it is you're trying to hobble over, and complex being quite tedious as you might have to collect several items throughout your game just to unlock and enter ONE DOOR.

Plot
Kratos, the "God of War" is back again and still being haunted by the nightmares of his dead family and horrible war struck past. Kratos is not seen by other gods as such, because he is so reckless. Kratos, being arrogant like he is, ignores Athena and her warnings NOT to go to war, however he does anyway which in short results in him being drained of his powers, now powerless, Kratos can't defeat the large colossus that was just animated. Zeus sees this and offers Kratos the "Blade of Olympus" in order to be able to defeat the monstrous colossus. Zeus recommends to Kratos that he use what little of his godly powers are left and channel that into the blade. Which he does which in turn renders him a mortal, but leaves the blade strong enough to defeat the Colossus.

Story
The storyline to this game follows a somewhat similar path that the first one did. Kratos is being used by the gods and then in the end turns down their final wishes for him, and they retaliate against him. He therefore goes and sets out against them for revenge. The game makes for a great gaming experience, and is fun from start to finish. The game is quite gory and uses some curse words, so, if that isn't your thing, then neither is this game. However, the combo based combat and the amazing puzzles within this game is what keeps my coming back to this series even today, and in my own opinion, it is one of the best PlayStation games that I have ever got the pleasure of playing.

Graphics
The graphics of this game follow the last game, except updated and therefore better. They have the same style of graphics and look amazing. Characters look mostly how they are portrayed in the Greek books, and share a lot of the same traits physically. Kratos looks beaten and battered like he really has experienced war as the "God of War" would have. He is also stained by the ashes of his family which makes for a quite saddening look on Kratos throughout the game. Lastly, the scenery such as the beautiful skylines and nature scenes poking around in the game, look great.

Controls
The controls of this game follow suite from the first game. The controls are combo based, so there is a heavy attack, light attack, as well as ranged attacks. The controls also work well for when the player is going through one of the platforms/puzzles. There are also multiple controller layouts within the game, however, I only ever played on the default as that is what I got accustomed to within the first game and it still works well, so I didn't need to change it or any button macros.

Ratings
Gameplay - 8/10

Overall - 8.5/10

Personal Note: This game was one of my favorite games within the God of War series. I almost want to say that this was the first game within the series that I played, but I could be wrong. This game looks beautiful, it is fun, and makes for a great gaming experience for most any player. The game is rated mature, so there is some sexually explicit scenes, quite a bit of blood and gore, and some cursing. Overall, still a wonderful game and gaming series, well worth a play and maybe even a purchase.
