Synopsis:
Hell is an experiment you can't survive in Outlast, a first-person survival horror game developed by veterans of some of the biggest game franchises in history. As investigative journalist Miles Upshur, explore Mount Massive Asylum and try to survive long enough to discover its terrible secret... if you dare.

Story:

The game begins as you pull up to Mount Massive Asylum in what appears to be a 1996 Jeep Wrangler(I may be wrong i dont know jeeps well.) Mount Massive is a private 'healthcare facility that is located in Colorado. The Asylum was restored by a private corporation named Murkoff Corporation. They disguise themselves as a charity organization in attempts to keep their inhumane human experiments hidden from the world. You play as the investigative journalist Miles Upshur, armed only with a video camera, who recently recieved an email from a whistleblower informing miles about the expereiments and asking him to come and record the events taking place to put an end to it all once and for all. Through the story youll meet several dynamic characters and many rather static ones as well. Many of the dynamic characters include Father Martin Archimbaud, Then Giant Psychotic war veteran Chris Walker, and Billy, he is the host for the wallrider which is an unstoppable killing machine. As you progress you will encounter many frightening enemies in which you can not stand in fight as you may only run and hide. As you progress your become more and more mentally unstable all the way until the very end. Can you escape Mount Massive alive?

Gameplay:

From the very start of the game you are told you can not fight, That all you can do is run and hide. So through out the entire game its essentially the same thing. Find a bad guy, run from the bad guy, hide from bad guy, hope for something to kill bad guy. But if this was the entire game it would be horrible. But instead to enhance the experince you are given a video camera with batteries, and as you use your cameras nightvision/flashlight you use those batteries(But not while your just recording without it) and finding batteries is one of your many side task. Alongside that files are also hidden around the asylum to give a disturbing background on many of the disturbing events happening here and the origins of the projects and company. Also when recording miles will take notes if an event is encountered while recording and you can read his insight and also monitor how he starts to slowly break down. Now onto what your probably wondering, Is this game scary? Yes, besides it being the samething over and over it is scary. When i played through i was constantly afraid of hearing "Little Piggy" as that was a sign of bad things to come. But outlast mainly relies on jump scares which can get repetitive. but the reason the game is scary is because no matter how much you think you got to a resting point, you really havent, your constantly forced to keep running and hiding, and the fast pace action never really ceases except for a few parts here and there. But yes you can expect to be pausing the game and quiting several times like i did after a traumatic event. Also did i Mention the gore and gruesome disgusting things you shall witness?(See them for your selves.) Now their are several different difficulties, these determine Amount of Hits to die and the amount of batteries you can carry and their life span. Now this is perfect as insane/highest difficulty is very challenging for those seeking a challenge. In insane you are tasked with completing the game like normally but with what i believe as 1 battery, and if you die, your done, game over. You'll have to restart. This is especially challenging as the game is around 10 hours long.

Controls:

PC:

On pc i assume it will handle the same as any other with movement as W,A,S,D and Looking using the mouse. But i havent experienced this yet as i prefer a controller on pc. Now even if you dont use a controller i would recommend it for this game. I used the PS3 Sixaxis and it handled great(Using motionjoy of course) but at times trying to turn on night vision and sprinting ,being in very odd layouts, confused me and even lead to me making a wrong move. But it all honesty the controlls where the biggest let down as they became confusing for me at least at times. But you should be able to find a layout perfect for you.

PS4:

As i hardly ever use my ps4 and tend to use my Ps3,PC, and xbox one more, i would not know the controls for this game or how well it handles.

Graphics:

For and indie game i was quite suprised. It had decent graphics but movement handled funny. The graphics went great with the environment of the game, but as far as im concerned the only issue I expereinced was Fuzz. The game seemed really fuzzy. Liked if my screen was becoming distorted. This may of been resolution issues. But really, the graphics where fine, but seemed really good for an indie game. Their also not that demanding as my HP Pavilion Laptop with an APU could even handle this game on medium 1080p around 30-45 fps.

Interesting Facts:

Not much really stands out, but the game really starts to get interesting when you start playing the whistleblower dlc. Oh But i guess this is interesting, While the DLC is yes a prequel, it also provides the true ending to the main story line, and i shall not say any more.

Personal Rating:
Overall: 8.5/10
Story: 7/10
Story +DLC: 9/10
Gameplay: 8/10
Controls: 8/10
Graphics 9/10

Reasoning:
My biggest complaint is the story. The story is fine but it feels incomplete unless you purchase the $10 DLC, as that gives the proper ending to the story. But not only that but while they imply that miles is becoming mentally unstable I rarely see it through the campaign. With the exception of a few notes or symbols flashing on the screens, But thats it no major mental meltdown or anything. But the ending of the game without dlc was really confusing until i got the Dlc and beat that. But other than that great game for $20 and atleast 8 hours of gameplay.
