Game Information
Release Date: August 26, 2010
Developers: Access Games
Publishers: Namco Bandai Games
Platforms: PSP
Genre: Arcade, Combat Flight Simulator
Players: 1, Multiplayer 2-8

Synopsis
Pilot over 40 fully licensed aircraft and control the skies in Ace Combat: Joint Assault. The second game in the franchise made for PSP, Joint Assault goes full throttle with intense, fast-paced dogfights, captivating visuals, real-world locations and robust multiplayer options. Aircrafts scream across the skies of Tokyo, San Francisco, and London. An advanced enemy A.I. changes the mission flow dynamically based on decisions made within the campaign, forcing players to strategically plan their attack. Players can participate in team-based multiplayer modes via ad hoc or infrastructure. Team up with three friends to take down the forces of evil in campaign mode, or battle against each other in intense eight-player adversarial matches across a variety of locations.

Plot
The player will be taking the role of a rookie pilot in the Antares squadron under Martinez Security. During a training session, Antares Squadron receives news that a hostile attack is being sent towards Tokyo. Upon entering Tokyo, Antares squadron encounter enemies from Valahia. Dumitrescu, the commander leading the attack offers a trade that 4 allies of Rigel Squadron accept and depart from the player. Later on, it comes that after Dumitrescu's death, the CEO of an insurance company named Andre Olivieri had ordered Valahia to betray him and be able to create his plan known as the "Golden Axe" plan. This plan was to send out a massive attack on San Francisco to expand his insurance company for huge profits.

Gameplay
Although the storyline throughout the entire game isn't that compelling that would get the player attached to it, the action of AC Joint Assault makes up for itself. The player takes part as a rookie pilot in the Antares squadron. After the first couple of missions, the player will engage with the enemy's super weapon "Spiridus",coincidentally the super weapon is relatively the same from its predecessor Ace Combat X, just with some enhancements and major changes to the design of the aircraft. At that point, the enemy's commander "Dumitrescu" will offer the RIgel squadron which is aiding the player by their side to help the player destroy the enemy a "bigger wage and more taste of battle" and by having the Rigel squadron's leader accept the offer, the rest of the squadron follows and deserts the player to fight alone. Later on in the game, the player will encounter the traitors and the Spiridus a couple of times until finally getting near the end of the campaign where the player will have to defeat the spiridus, then concluding the final mission with the 4 traitors now known as the "Varcolac Squadron" with their top of the line super aircraft, the GAF-1 Varcolac.

Multiplayer
Compared to its predecessor ACX Skies Of Deception, the multiplayer portion really hasn't had any change. The multiplayer portion will offer the same game-modes as in ACX Skies Of Deception. The only difference of the multiplayer portion is that the player can have up to 3 other players to help them in the campaign.

Graphics
The graphics featured on AC Joint Assault have been improved since its predecessor ACX Skies Of Deception. The different types of designs that can be equipped on the player's aircraft are greatly detailed. When the player shoots a missile and hits the aircraft, the player will see little shards of debris falling from the destroy aircraft before imploding into a fireball. Just like ACX, the details and textures of the buildings and landscape are lacking. When flying lose to the ground, the buildings appear to be completely flat. There are only a few structures that actually have detail on them but that is probably because it is seen in a cutscene or just a "point of view".

Controls
The controls are nonetheless the same as ACX Skies Of Deception. If the player doesn't like the way the controls are set-up, then the player can change the settings to their liking. If the player uses an aircraft that has a very high statistic in mobility, the player will have to get comfortable not holding down the control stick in any direction since the aircraft could easily overturn. But after getting used to the control of it, that shouldn't be a problem to deal with.

Ratings
Gameplay: 9/10
Graphics: 8.5
Controls: 9.5
Overall: 9/10

Extra Information
Ace Combat Joint Assault is most likely the predecessor of Assault Horizon and not the successor of Ace Combat X, due to taking place in the real world.

This is the 2nd Ace Combat title on the PSP.

Story: The story isn't too overly complicated too follow, it paints you as the hero of the story, pushing your country out of the oppression of another, you also build a nemesis relationship with one of the enemy pilots as an added bonus.

Gameplay: If you played an Ace Combat game before you know EXACTLY what to expect here, this is a dogfighting action packed, arcade like flight-sim. The more you fly a plane the more colour schemes and weapons you unlock for said plane, making you try out what every plane has to offer. It has a mission type selection screen, with branching paths, this gives the ability to replay the game and play previously unplayed missions with the already unlocked planes at your disposal.
The controls are tight and there are 2 types of controls, expert gives you full control of your plane, beginner levels you out when hanging upside down which makes it easier for people not used to flying game, personally I think expert is better, since it gives you more freedom to get behind enemies..

Graphics: The graphics are very much like the previous Ace Combat on PSP, they look pretty good, the plane models are well done just as the menu interface is pretty sleek.

Music: The music was hit and miss for me, there were some good songs in there, but it was not very memorable.

All in all, Ace Combat: Joint Assault is a step down from the superior Skies of Deception, the mission select is not ordered well and the CPU usually is not doing much to help you, while I did find the rivalry with the other squadron a plus point, the rest of the story is a let down. If you're a fan of Ace Combat or action games alike you might find something good here... My verdict: good game with some shortcomings.
