Synopsis

Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie is a first person shooter action adventure game based on the 2005 film King Kong. It is a collaboration between the film's director Peter Jackson and famed videogame designer Michel Ancel (Rayman, Beyond Good & Evil), remarkable in that such true cross-medium creative partnerships are rare in the realm of game development. It was released on PC and sixth generation platforms on November 17, 2005, as well as a mobile version also released in Winter 2005, developed by Gameloft. In the United States, the Game Boy Advance version is titled Kong: The 8th Wonder of the World. All film cast members reprise their roles.

Setting

Well the game is set on Skull Island 'the missing piece of the map'. The game is set on you being Jack Driscoll going around the entire island trying to escape/re-unite/ and survive. The game took a rather depressing angle, as nearly the whole time it was raining, also there was alot of the stuff in the game that wasn't in the film and honestly plot-wise i prefer the game, it goes deeper into the origins of the Island, which is why i loved this game. It was kinda like a puzzle game as there was alot of platform jumping and finding your way around. Overall the setting was brilliant and i liked the way they took a turn away from the main plot and focused on something much bigger.

Setting Rating:8.8/10

Gameplay

The gameplay was fantastic. The 1st person aspect was brilliant, this was my first, first-person game that i ever owned and it was actually pretty easy for me to get the hang of. There were a variety of different enemies you cam up against, most frequent was Giant Millipedes and Centipedes which were very annoying due to the fact they could slide across walls and were very stealthy and quick. But the dinosaurs were the worse, i remember coming across my first T-Rex and i just craped myself, i had no idea what to do. I was just throwing sticks at it, and then it would just eat me. Eventually i was able to kill it once i went back and got a gun. The best thing about this game was probably the missions were you could be King Kong, i mean it was just amazing, being a 40ft ape going around swinging from trees, smashing stuff over, and killing dinosaurs, after boxing a T-Rex about you had 2 finisher moves you could do, tear his jaw apart or lift him above you and then snap his spine. If that isn't the best idea ever i dont know what is. I enjoyed the switch between Man and Beast. It made the game fun and not too easy, being King Kong all the time would probably would make the game to easy and boring, King Kong was basically there as a break from killing raptors with your bear hands. The main thing that kept me cling to this game was getting 250,000 points on each mission so that i could do the alternate ending were Kong doesn't get killed, and when i unlocked it, it was pretty beast, wasn't worth the time but i guess thats how they got you hooked to this game.

Gameplay Rating:9.4/10

Graphics

The graphics for this game at the time were pretty good, they managed to get the lip movement of characters spot on, and the sound of gun shots from your gun was very realistic and looked good. I also had no bugs while playing this game. The scenery was all in 3D giving the game a sense of realism, that i was actually on Skull Island while playing it. Overall the graphics were smooth and i have nothing to complain about.

Controls

The controls weren't very complicated although i had trouble remembering that to throw objects was R1 along with shooting also being R1, There was also the perfect amount of sensitivity. So i could quickly turn around and shoot some Serpents face off. Overall the controls were easy and simple to use apart from the odd confusion with the R1 button everything was swell.

Controls Rating:8.2/10

Game Reception

The PC and console versions generally received very positive reviews. However, the Nintendo DS and PSP versions were widely panned by reviewers because of bugs and glitches, poor level design and enemy AI. The DS version was listed in the 'Flat-Out Worst Game' list of GameSpot's Best & Worst of 2005.

Overall

Overall the game was pretty fantastic, everything about it was great, i loved the way it got into depth with the origins of Skull Island, that made the game go into a view that the film couldn't. Brilliant game allround.

Overall Rating:8.7/10
