Synopsis

Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier is a platform game developed by High Impact Games published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It is a part of Naughty Dog's Jak and Daxter series, and was released on November 3, 2009 for the PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 2. The player assumes the role of Jak, the angst-ridden hero enhanced by his exposure to Light and Dark eco. The game was released to favourable reviews, with critics praising the graphics and gameplay, but criticized the bad camera angles and its bland and repetitive environments and ground fights.

Setting

The setting for this just amazed me, they just did it again came back with some more ideas and they were brilliant. I mean Jak and Daxter The Precursor Legacy is all foot travel Jak 2&3 Its a mix between foot/Car/Hoverboard but in this its walk/Spaceship! That is what i really enjoyed about this spin off. Also they kept the free roam ability in the game which was good because the game does have a pretty massive world. Overall i really liked the setting i loved the way they moved travel to spaceships and i really hope they bring out 1 more game, if they do..i will die a happy man!

Setting Rating:8.4/10

Gameplay

The gameplay was very good they took the main world idea from Jak and Daxter The Precursor Legacy with all the jumps and moving platforms that you had to jump from to get to the other side, and they took the main idea from Jak 2&3 to bring weapons into the game, and then they brang in some completely new elements to make this game even more enjoyable. First off well Daxter falls into dark eco again, (if you have no idea what im on about i will be putting links to the reviews of the previous games at the bottom of the review) Making him a massive brute monster that goes through sewers and stuff attacking over creatures that have also changed due to the affects of dark eco, i found this really fun, because there isn't really any time in the original games to bulldozer through things and this was the chance to do so, and well i love them for giving me this chance. Jak also as he develops through the game becomes more aware to new powers such as being able to slow down time to make platforms that are going to fast or enemies so its easier to kill them. Being able to hover by using Yellow Eco come out of your hands and it blasts you into the air this was really useful when theres a bunch of enemies and i really dont wanna fight them and i just take off. And make platforms out of the ground to reach platforms too high for Jak to jump to. And making a bubble shield around your whole body, this was good for charging through stuff or going into an area you know your going to get blasted to hell, these new elements really made the game enjoyable. The ability to have Spaceship battles now was excellent i belive they got the idea from where you had that Spaceship battle in Jak 3 but now it was more developed with more Spaceships, being able to choose what one you wanted for a specific battle, and being able to use the money your earn in missions to upgrade your Spaceship. You can also upgrade Jak aswell, making hes punches stronger buying stiff for your outfit eg. Spikes on your shoulders which did kinda look cool, and you could buy jetpacks for him, which came in handy quite alot. There was only one downfall to this game, the was you could not move your camera angle, this wasn't that bad because the game was still fun but it made things complicated when i want to jump from one platform to another, or im in a battle and i cant see whos trying to kill me, but apart from that it was fine. Overall the gameplay was really enjoyable, apart from the camera angle they really couldn't have made this game any better, great spin-off for the series, i personally loved it.

Gameplay Rating:9.4/10

Graphics

The graphics were pretty good, better than previous games and this game came out in 2009 so some fresh graphics for the spin-off series. There were no bugs that i had experienced, when shooting and jak doing his spin attack i saw no flaws in visuals, also the cutscenes had amazing graphics. Overall the graphics were smooth and amazing!

Controls

Well the controls were simple, very little effort really goes into the controls because they were easy, the one major problem was the camera angle flaw i kept pressing my left stick to move the camera angle then remembering it didn't work, but apart from that the game was really good, and the controls could do with some work if they plan to release a new game or a sequel.
Controls Rating:7.1/10

Game Reception

The game has received mixed to positive reviews. GameSpot gave the game 7.5/10. Joystiq's assessment was negative; after playing a preview code of the game, they "were surprised that SCEA had done so little to promote the existence of the next true continuation of the [Jak] series," and went on to say that they "can see why Sony would stay so secretive: it's not very good." They criticized the game's awkward camera and lack of explanations for those new to the series, but they noted that "the Dark Daxter sequences promise adrenaline for a game that otherwise feels stagnant and boring." However, Greg Miller from IGN was more positive, stating that "the thing that struck me was how good the graphics looked." He gave it a 7.4 out of 10 rating, but commented on the poor camera views and how Jak no longer had a goatee (though it is accessible in a cheat.) . JustPushStart reviewer Jon Christopher called it an "enjoyable and enthralling action platformer game." Although he criticized its "clich storyline," he awarded the game a 4.5/5. AceGamez took a more critical view, calling the game "a severe disappointment from start to finish."

Jak and Daxter Series

Overall

Overall this game was pretty amazing, wasn't as good as the original series but this game had great Graphics,Setting and gameplay. I also very enjoyed the new elements they brang in and i hope they bring out another! It should be very cheap on PSP probably about $10 so if you want to buy it it wont be a waste i assure you.

Overall Rating:8.7/10
