Synopsis

Velvet Assassin is a violent stealth action game set in German-controlled territory at the height of World War II. Players take the role of Violette Summer, a young woman who has lost everything to the war, and who now only seeks revenge against the Nazi regime that destroyed her world. In the missions of the game's single-player campaign, Violette sabotages important facilities, disrupts enemy communications and logistics lines, and silently eliminates prominent Nazi soldiers and officials. The game's entire adventure is presented as a flashback, as Violette lies in a coma in hospital and relives the most thrilling and perilous moments of her missions, all in her mind. Players can collect syringes to give the comatose Violette a morphine injection, which grants her extraordinary speed and accuracy in the action of her dream, and also causes her to appear in action wearing her hospital clothes. Velvet Assassin is based on the story of real-life Allied secret agent and recipient of the George Cross, Violette Szabo, who revealed the locations of crucial bombing targets and disrupted German communications following D-Day, before being captured, tortured, and eventually killed in the line of duty.

Gameplay

Gameplay in this game is devised really well. You play as a female british spy in WW2 behind enemy lines. Frequently you have to sneak around in this game to assassinate guards that are in your path. Usually if you are quite, move along with the shadows and stay behind the right cover then you won't get caught. Please don't try to run out with your guns blazing as you won't get very far. Believe me, I've tried and the enemies have just mowed me down time and time again. For this game, you need quite a lot of patience, as opportunities to kill enemies comes up often you also need to make sure that you don't get caught. The enemies in the game are relatively stupid and can't spot you if they run by and you're hiding behind a barrel. Things like that don't make the gameplay that realistic and it would have been nice to make the game a little more stealthy. Also in the game, when you get close enough to an enemy the screen will start to go red and it will prepare for you to perform the assassination. The game will prompt what button you need to press in order to complete the assassination successfully and push on further in the mission. In the game you have the ability to pick up the bodies that you have just killed and drag them into to the darkness to avoid detection. The only problem I had with the game is eavesdropping on guards to find out what my next objective would be in certain missions. When they would stop talking I would inevitably die and have to listen to the guards again. This game does require quite the amount of patience and you need to listen well if you are to have any hope in completing this game. If you do like stealth games and being a ninja then it might be worthwhile for you to check out this game. I found it enjoyable however hiding in the shadows took much time out the game.

Graphics

Graphics is Velvet Assassin look pretty nice. Nearly all of the elements in the game contrast well with each other in the game. They definitely give out that stealth appeal and atmosphere for those that love these kind of games. In game, the environments that you play around in look spectacular. You play in various environments during the course of the campaign and all of them seem well designed and developed which is great to see. Clothing in the game is good and most of the time you are wearing a tight black outfit that is quite fitting for the role of the character that you partake in. In other scenarios, you will find yourself in other kinds of clothing such as nightgowns and other garments. Effects such as gun fire and explosions are spectacular. It left me jumping up and down at points in the campaign as I ended a level or mission with a massive explosion in style. Which is obviously adrenaline rushing and visually sweet to look at. Morphine time (a drug that can be used to go into slow motion) can be really helpful if you are having problems completing a level or taking out a certain guard. Going into it really gives you that blood pumping feeling as the effects around in start to blur and blood pumps faster around your screen which puts you in the mood to take out that annoying guard that has been bothering you. This effect works really well and it personally left me on the edge of my seat to take out that enemy that's been causing me trouble. The developers have worked amazingly on the graphics and it really was enjoyable to play in. Playing this game in High Definition was pretty thrilling.

Overall, the gameplay is really exciting and the campaign is thorough. There are a shortage in checkpoints in the levels so you find yourself restarting the level again until you reach a checkpoint. This game does require a lot of patience, so be stealthy and move with the shadows. I would definitely recommend this game to those that are looking for a sneak game that's both sneaky and thrilling. This is the one.

Game Rating : 9/10 (Gameplay is thorough but the lack of checkpoints is frustrating, graphics are nicely developed and textured and controls are basic and easy to learn right off the bat. Game may sometimes prompt you to press certain button if you get stuck)
