Story
Having played the first game (considering it mediocre) and omitting the second instalment I was neither here nor there about trying this title - if I had to buy it I would probably have left it altogether (god bless JTAGs). Anyways, I got it, I've played it, and here it is.
I was at a loss to begin with when I started playing this game as far as the story was concerned - plotline can be hard to gauge at times and is only really progressed during the cut scenes.
On deployment you find yourself armed with trusty mallet of destruction and a basic shooter for spraying baddies over the background scenery. After breaking into a compound which is under attack and fighting off alien shock troops (where you learn the basics of controls - aiming/firing/dodging/wrecking) you work your way through the base and into the gullet of larger station. It's at this point that the main plot really begins, as you tear open a plughole of doom to the nether reaches of Mars, and boldly fall where others have been less clumsy. Upon landing you soon discover that you were fooled into both opening the hole, and also jumping into it. The tomb is infested with the original Martian inhabitants - are they happy to see you? Hell no. They proceed to wage unholy war upon the now colonists destroying everything they can find and leaving rubble in their wake. Since you were the one dumb enough to fall for the ploy and open the tomb, the blame is place squarely on you, as various groups of the colonies team up and extricate their wrath on you. What can you do to vindicate yourself - join the Red Faction and kick alien ass. Here we go again!

Gameplay
The gameplay is quite different from the original Red Faction I played some time back - sure you still have your mallet and can cause wanton destruction to any and all structures within reach, but there are two major differences. Firstly, the environment is far more malleable in Armageddon - structures can be used as weapons instead of just being torn down to achieve a goal. The use of the two-point-shot magnetic gun is the best example of this, as by shooting point 1 to the side of a building, then point 2 to an area near your enemy, you can bring a structure crashing down into them. This opens up a whole new avenue of carnage that can be utilised in battle to either mangle foes, or simply to create a barrier separating you from them if things get hairy. Secondly the direction of the game has evolved from an open world roaming landscape to linear FPS progression style, with level architecture looking more like something out of Gears of War 2 then the original Red Faction.
While this evolved gameplay style quickens the pace of the game, it also lacks a certain punch, and as such can at times become bland. The developers have covered this somewhat with the use of futuristic heavy weapons, cool driveables, and obviously the interactive environment. For the most part this balance works out very well and you will find yourself happy to go back for more, but I still feel that this is a game that won't be ran through twice.
There's no multiplayer death-match/free-for-all aspect to Red Faction Armageddon but there is a co-op defend against the hordes type mode called infestation which should keep you entertained. Something akin to COD zombies your goal is to fend off increasingly difficult waves of alien attacks and see how far you can get before finally succumbing to their numbers.

Graphics
The rendering at cut scenes is sharp and expressions/movements are natural and well done. That said; the graphics in general of the game are nice, but far from impressive. The characters in game lack in a level of detail that I would expect from a title that's had this amount of funding, and has been developed from a well know graphics house. The levels and background look good, but this is mainly due to the darkness and contrast of being underground in a mine - on closer inspection you can notice pixilation and unrounded blocky landscapes. I know, it's a mine right, but not all rocks are hexagons!

Controls
The human control system is simple and intuitive, which was a saving grace as far as general gameplay and a final rating goes. The control system of the various driveables also mirrors this and won't provide any frustration in that respect.
You can power yourself up and also upgrade weapons at various stations throughout the game by collecting scrap from destroyed structures and using it as currency. This adds an element to the wanton destruction of buildings - it's not just venting rage if you're collecting supplies for upgrades at the same time!

Rating: 7

Good game but story lacked depth
SPOILER ALERT:
Why didnt they just rebuild the terraformer in the first place instead of being forced to do it when bugs attack?
