| long story short, im looking to take guitar lessons and want to know a decent guitar to buy for ideally less than $150 but am willing to step into the $200 range |

| Well, the cheaper the guitar the more you're going to compromise on sound, but for beginners Yamaha is perfect.. I know it is out of the price range that you mentioned, but the Taylor Baby series is one of the best guitars for beginners. That's what I started out with and still use it to this day. |

Are you getting an electric or acoustic? Obviously you'd have to factor in cables, pics, an amp, etc. depending on what you're looking for.
There are many good beginner brands. A lot of the time you can get a good deal on one used locally. A lot of the big name brands have a side brand geared towards beginners, with a lower price tag. For example, Fender has Squier, Gibson has Ephiphone, etc. My first guitar was an Ibanez that cost me $150, which works fine to this day. IMO most of the well known brands will work fine for a beginner. You can probably find something in your price range from a good chunk of these well known brands. |
