I'm in the market for a new desktop and have a budget of around $1,000. I need a machine that can play Civilization VI (and eventually Civ VII), Elder Scrolls Online, and Baldur's Gate III. I don't need to run those games at max settings to be happy, just want a decent visual experience.

My son and I have added RAM to our current computer, but that's our experience "building" a computer. Are we better off buying a pre-built machine or trying to build one? If we buy, any recommendations? If we build, any recommendations on components as well as how to videos for putting everything together?

Thanks for your help.

My honest thoughts here. If you go out to build I'd wait for parts to find them 2nd or on sale. Personally I don't know the requirements for the game you want. If you're rushing to get it going buy a built one. But building your own will always get you better quality for a cheaper price.

I'm not in a rush. My main concern is if we can build our own machine with very little experience. Adding RAM was pretty straightforward, but I'm not sure how much harder it is do put everything together.

Check out Joey Delgado on YouTube he's an amazing PC builder and links all components in his description per build in case someone wants to build that PC, definitely worth a look and he's got a wide range of builds that will match you budget if prices haven't shifted since he uploaded the build you watch!

I followed his Venom PC build and it was my first build and it was very straightforward but be very cautious with any sharp corners or metal pieces I cut my hand when putting the IO shield into the case lol.

I will check some of his videos out tonight! As for injuries, I'll probably let my son do most of the work. I somehow slammed my finger in the car door in February. As I get older, it seems it's easier and easier for me to accidentally hurt myself.

Thank you!

buying a pre built and upgrading parts later down the road is your best bet

I would personally always build a computer over buying a pre-built. Unfortunately, in these times, that means waiting until you can find a reasonably priced GPU for your budget in stock, and then building the rest of the system around that. If that's too much hassle, then a pre-built honestly isn't the most terrible idea these days, but you'll most likely still sacrifice some quality somewhere.

If you're up for building, we can help with a parts list, but only so much since half the battle will be actually finding stuff in stock at the right price.
