Hello all! First post in here..im new...I have a really strange problem with a pc I'm building with my boy...he's interested in electronic stuff so grabbed an old junker motherboard...MTQ45NK...had heaps of parts laying around for it...a cpu..ram..video card etc...
Anyway...the strange thing is...using the on-board video I can get the thing loaded in to Windows with 8g of ram When I install a a video card...an RX580 the pc won't boot...because of the ram! I have to take out 3 sticks...then it boots up fine with the 2g of ram.no matter what I have tried...flashed bios etc etc I can't get the video card and all installed ram to play together... If I make it 2 sticks of ram it will boot up to the windows 7 splash screen...as the dots start to form the windows logo it stops at the dots...loads in to windows but the screen is all messed up! If I take out that second stick it boots up fine! Drivers for the card are the latest...bios is the latest etc....what do you think would cause this anomaly? I know it's an old board...but I don't know where to begin...ram and the video card shouldn't need to be compatible?..could it be that the card is just too new for the board? Doesn't make any sense that one works without the other! Any insight greatly appreciated! Cheers all |

Is the RAM the same make and model, you don't have different brands do you?
After checking the spec of the board, can you make sure the RAM is compatible to what the board requires: 4 x 240-pin DDR3 DIMM slots Supports - DDR3 1066? When you say the screen is messed up, is it like artifacting such as the image below: https://www.tenforums.com/attachments/graphic-cards/143385d1499720979t-artifacts-screen-screen-goes-black-20170710_133455.jpg If so, it typically points to bad RAM and should be replaced. Personally I would spend £70 get a latest gen 2nd hand board, CPU and supporting RAM and let your kid play around on that. Avoids the headaches of issues plus your kid will be up to date with the latest kit plus Windows 10 |

Cheers for the reply mate....and yes you are right..I really should get rid of this old junk and move up so to speak...
It was more just a see if I can get all this running project..he's only 5 years old..so the actual performance of the thing won't matter that much! Anyway..um thinking that the newer cards are not all that compatible with the older motherboard(s) I'm thinking it could be the newer memory in them... I had an old r7 200 amd in the garage and threw that in for shits and giggles...booted up right away with the 8g of ddr3 ram in it..no problems..could even install the latest AMD drivers for it But yeah I'm going to start building something a bit newer... Thanks again! |
