Hey everyone, I'm currently thinking about upgrading my graphics card. I currently have a Nvidia GeForce GTX 950 and was initially thinking about going to the GeForce RTX 2060 or the GTX 1660-Ti. However, someone told me it would be extremely bottlenecked and the only way I could upgrade is if I also upgrade my motherboard and CPU.

My motherboard is the ASUSTek M5A78L-M/USB3 and my CPU is the AMD FX(tm)-4300 Quad Core Processor.

Is there any point in trying to upgrade? Is there a graphics card you would suggest? Thank you in advance!

You could *maybe* upgrade to a 1060 3GB but the 1660-ti and especially the 2060 would be bottlenecked to hell. I think maybe an RX460 or a 1050ti would be about your max, but not sure if you could find any new anymore.

That is not accurate. Even if you were to see no performance gains from a GPU upgrade because of a "bottleneck", you are still able to do the upgrade, it just wouldn't be beneficial.

In what situation did they say you would be bottlenecked exactly? If they just pretty much said "dat CPU bottleneck GPU" then they don't know what they're talking about.
There is always going to be a bottleneck in your system. Which component is the bottleneck will depend entirely on the situation.

In fairness, an FX-4300 is pretty old at this point and even when it was new, it wasn't particularly good, so a CPU upgrade wouldn't be a bad idea. That said, swapping from a GTX 950 to a GTX 1660Ti or RTX 2060 would have you see vast improvements in the majority of situations.

As for what upgrades I would suggest, I can't do anything without more information.

Requesting upgrade advice

  • Post your current specs including the model number of your power supply.
  • How much do you want to spend on the upgrade? Budget AND currency.
  • What is your goal for the upgrade?

If you could also tell us the make and model of the monitor(s) you'll be using with your system.

Ok, thank you so much! I'm thinking I might upgrade to a Ryzen 3 3200g and go from there (probably go with the 1660-Ti)
