Hey y'all. I have an i5-8600k CPU currently.

My motherboard is the ROG MAXIMUS X HERO (WIFI and AC)

Im planning to upgrade my CPU to an i9-9900k but to do that, id have to update my BIOS.

Im not super tech savvy but I really need the step-by-step guide; do I upgrade my BIOS to i9 WITH my i5 CPU still installed?

or do I have to upgrade BIOS once I change the CPU?

May seem like a stupid question but i just dont wanna F up my PC lol.

Thank you <3

You will need to update the BIOS with the older CPU installed. Once the BIOS has been updated, then the newer CPU will be supported, so only once the BIOS has been updated can you install the new CPU.

I would make sure you absolutely have to update BIOS before doing so. If you don't need to update BIOS, then avoid it.

If you DO have to update BIOS, make absolutely sure you're downloading the BIOS for your specific motherboard. So, make sure you get the BIOS for the Maximus X Hero(Wi-FI), and not the BIOS for the non-WiFi variant.

Id look up a tutorial on how to bios update if you arent familiar with it.

as 21 said, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE TO before you do. Can avoid so much hastle if you dont have to do it.

Do I have to download the i9 BIOS while I have i5 CPU on? I already updated my BIOS to the i5 version

Versions of BIOS

Like the picture, I updated my BIOS to the i5 VERSION. Would I need to update it to the i9 version while still on the i5CPU BEFORE installing the i9?

Actually, I forgot that your motherboard has BIOS Flashback functionality, so ignore what I said here;

You will need to update the BIOS with the older CPU installed... so only once the BIOS has been updated can you install the new CPU.

You don't actually need the i5 installed to update the BIOS.

Yes. If you install the i9 without the relevant BIOS, then the system will not boot. Your motherboard did not need to be updated to support an i5-8600k.

What is this a screenshot of?

What is the actual BIOS revision that you are currently running?

asus.com/Motherboards/ROG-MAXIMUS..._Download/
This is the download page for drivers and BIOS updates for your motherboard. This is where you should be getting the BIOS you're using.
From what I can see, Version 1602 seems to be the first revision that supports the 9900k. If you're running Version 1602 or later, then you don't have to update BIOS to support the 9900k.

If you do have to update the BIOS, then you can do so with either the i5 or i9 installed. The system just won't boot with the i9 installed, until it has the BIOS to support it. However, you can use USB Bios Flashback without a CPU installed at all so if you've got the i9 in the mobo and need to update, you can just use BIOS Flashback.
If you have the i5 installed, then you can just boot into BIOS and update it in there, then install the i9 and you're good to go. Either way works just fine.

Yes. 2402 seems to be the most recent BIOS for your motherboard, so that will absolutely support the 9900k.
