So I just build my PC last month. However seeing the specs of the 3080. Is it really worth selling my 2080 super to upgrade to the 3080? I should I wait until the next series drop or even the 3080 super if it is released?

I would say not worth unless you can either sell your 2080 super for nearly full purchase price or keep it and maybe get some other use out of it like a lan party pc or one for streaming. Even thought the 2080 super is at the end of its retail life cycle, its going to be a strong card for the next several years.

i too have just built a machine recently with a 2080ti and 9th gen i9900k really wishing i waited for the 3090 drop and went 10th gen CPU

Are the new cards mainly just improving ray tracing? kind of what I got out of the preview. I mean the 3080 only has 2 more GB of GDDR6. Most games at Ultra settings really only use 4-5 GB of ram. atleast for my 2156x1440 144Hz monitor.

The new cards are actually a pretty massive improvement in performance for a fraction of the price. For example, the 3070 is pretty comparable to the 2080 Ti in performance for a fraction of the price. And, while it may only have 2g more vram, it is a much faster type of vram in the new cards. All that being said, I dont see a serious need for anyone with new cards to upgrade. IMO, its a waste of money unless you are getting some kind of use out of the old card. I JUST upgraded my 5700 xt thinking the difference between current and next gen would only be marginal but unfortunately I was wong.... if I upgrade, I'm just going to use my old card in a streaming/guest rig

EDIT: the tldr is pretty much only upgrade if ur gpu is old and stinky

No.

It's also an entirely different architecture from Turing, and the 3080 has significantly more CUDA cores than an RTX 2080/Super, or even an RTX 2080Ti.

It depends on your CPU and system RAM how much VRAM will be used in games, so the same game won't necessarily use the same amount of VRAM on 2 slightly different machines. Regardless, I can absolutely guarantee that there are games out there that benefit from more than 4-5GB VRAM, especially at 1440p144Hz.

Whether or not you should upgrade is entirely up to you.
Does your 2080 Super do what you want it to? If yes, then no need to upgrade. If not, and you have the budget for an RTX 3070 or above, then maybe consider an upgrade.

One key thing to add is don't buy one before we have proper 3rd party benchmarks and such as well as upcoming RDNA2 release from AMD; you may end up (unlikely but possible) regretting the RTX 3000 series purchase when you could've bought an RDNA2 GPU.
