I bought a JTAG Xenon from JTAGxPrivate and he asked me what Freeboot kernel I wanted.

I have done RGH installs but know nothing about Freeboot

Can someone who knows more it about explain what it is / does?

Usually means there's gonna be a second nand involved (?) so that way you can keep your original kernel is all. So that way you can update to the latest dash without even having to change the kernel at all.
Actually if I remember correctly new freeboot doesn't even use dual NAND anymore.
I'm not too keen on what the benefits of freeboot are other than being able to run 2 kernels and keep your original, other than being able to say use a SATA drive with the console.
So I'm guessing the Xenon he wants to sell you has a very low original kernel which is why he's offering to load the 2nd one for you.

It has the 7371 kernel on it. Thanks for explaining it. I'm sending the console back at some point to get a case cut done and the freeboot is going to be updated to 17559

Hi OPUS, what 3CH said above is actually completely INCORRECT unfortunately, to put it very simply - Freeboot is a modified/patched version of the dashboard (kernel) which removes security features & allows you to run unsigned programs (executables) along with other things.

Thanks

Is the base kernel still the same or is changed when you update the dash?

IE could you go back to the previous dash?

The base kernel for every retail Xbox 360 is 2.0.1888.0, if your Xbox was JTAG'd whilst running on that kernel, you could create a freeboot version of 2.0.17559.0 (current kernel) & you can also downgrade back to 2.0.1888.0 as the process bypass's the eFuses allowing you to downgrade back to the original kernel.

However, due to new research & patches you can now RGH a console running on 2.0.17559.0 & downgrade to 2.0.6717.0 (on phat's) & 2.0.9199.0 (on slim's)

I know this is an older thread, but does anyone know how to downgrade current dash to 6717 while keeping the kernel current?

Is your console modded (JTAG or RGH)?

Is is a PHAT or a Slim?

If it is then you need your original NAND dump.
You will then need JRunner. Load your NAND Dump in JRunner. Then select the dash 6717 (PHAT) or 9199 (Slim) in the XeBuild menu in the top right corner.

Also select the glitch type you have. JTAG or RGH (Glitch or Glitch 2 and select RGH3 if a slim that has been modded that way)

Create XeBuild and then copy it to the root a FAT32 USB and load up Xell (Power on console with eject button). Or Simple 360 NAND Flasher (Copy the updflash.bin to the same folder as the xex)

Then Write.

That should be the way to do it. JTAGxPrivate has a lot more experience than I do. If you would like more clarification give him a message
