My nephew has had an XBox 360 for years but recently it started getting the RROD red ring of death.
As a temporary measure he has been using his girlfriend's XBox - he took the hard disk out of his XBox 360E and put it into her XBox 360S and has been using that successfully for a few weeks.

We bought him another 360S - but when he started using it last week it no longer signs in.

He enters his email address and password, after a couple of seconds a "user <his username> signed in" message pops up at the bottom along with his avatar, but the cursor is still showing the spinning circle busy animation on the right.

Nothing else happens for ages, at least 5 minutes but possibly longer.
Eventually it then shows error 80072741, bit it can't be fully signed in so cannot play any games that he has downloaded. He can't even watch Netflix or other online things since he has to sign in to his XBox Live account first.
I think they need to work on having more descriptive/useful error messages, and actually showing the progress of what it is trying to do!

He has tried putting his hard disk back into his girlfriend's XBox - exactly the same issue.

I found this on MS website:
If you get this message and status code, it could mean one of these things:
Some Xbox LIVE features are not available because of system maintenance or a temporary Xbox LIVE issue.
You can't access some Xbox LIVE features because of a network configuration issue.
There might be a problem with your credit card. For example, your billing information might be incorrect, or your credit card might have expired.

A network test performs successfully.
All XBox live features are currently working (according to their website test).
Nothing has changed with the internet/network configuration, all other devices in the house still work.
The credit card has not expired and nothing else has happened to invalidate it.

My sister even rang up Microsoft UK (where we are) and after ages on the phone waiting and taking various options she was told that they "cannot help with Microsoft Live sign-in issues"!

We haven't been able to find much to help by searching, except someone suggested deleting his profile and cache from the hard disk - but he is very reluctant to do that since he thinks it will remove all of his saved games/progress.

thanks for reading, hoping that someone can help!

Try signing into the account on xbox.com. It could be a security verification issue which happens sometimes when signing in to an account on multiple consoles.

Hi Crippy - thanks for your reply.

My sister did actually do that yesterday (it is her credit card that is used for the billing) and there wasn't anything that would indicate any security issues or something needs to be verified.

However - I was there too and I noticed a "devices" option so we took that and it said that there were no devices registered to this account.
We then added the serial number of the new Xbox into the website manually - it now showed 1 device registered.
The XBox was restarted but it did not make any difference:
when signing in it does flash up a "user signed in" message at the bottom of the screen, but the spinning circle busy cursor remains on the right hand side for a number of minutes before finally showing the same error.

I don't know if this is related or not:
when the new XBox was first switched on and connected to the WiFi there were a lot of updates to download, and it restarted 2 or 3 times.
That was before the first chance to sign in.

When he later put his hard drive back into his girlfriend's XBox it too then did a lot of update downloads - it too will no longer let him sign in.

Sorry I just saw this. The only other thing I can think of is delete the account from the hard drive, then go to storage settings and while you're hovered over the hard drive option press Y and select the option to delete the cache. Then redownload the account and try signing in. Also make sure it says dashboard or kernel version 2.0.17559 under console info in the settings menu.

Hi

Yeah I saw that recommended on Microsoft's website - my nephew wasn't too keen on doing that in case he lost all of his stuff (the help for it says it should keep the important stuff like his saved games).
We might have to do that and hope it works - won't be able to try until Monday night though.

I'm going to try backing up his HDD first - I know it's a modification of FATX, my backup program should be able to back it up sector by sector if it doesn't understand the format.
Just to stop him from worrying about losing everything!

Thanks for your assistance.

Just make sure to back up all the game saves before deleting the account, everything else will be fine and the saves should be too. When you go to delete it, it gives you the option to delete just the profile and not any items attached to it. I'm pretty positive that will fix any issues since it wasn't the security verification. You can back the game saves up with just a USB drive or external HDD from the storage settings on the console I'm pretty sure also so you shouldn't have to back up the whole drive unless you just want to.

FATXplorer on the PC is a 360 HDD reader/formatter program.

It can read the file system of a 360 HDD. The profiles are saved in the content partition of it.

They come under the Content folder

HDD:\Content\Profile XUID

Use an XUID grabber to get the XUID of the profile, it will be a bunch of numbers and letters and in there will be all of the related files (game saves/DLC etc) of the profile

Hi Crippy

Thinking about it more I'm now not so sure it will work:
the "new" (actually a refurbished used one, not sure you can even buy 360 brand new anymore?)
came with an empty hard drive.
My nephew took that out and was using his existing disk with his profile and all installed + saved games, where we have the issue.
I got him to also try signing in with the empty hard drive - the result was exactly the same issue:
signed in, got the "signed in" message and then just the busy spinning circle icon, after a few minutes the same error code.

But we'll give it a go - not sure when it will be now, possibly tomorrow or Wednesday night.

I've looked at a few Windows utilities that should be able to look at 360 formatted hard drives, plus a disk/partition backup program.
What I'm planning to do is to create an image file of his existing disk, and possibly back it up to the spare empty hard drive, so he has an exact duplicate should anything go wrong.

Hi TTGCosmicMods
thanks for your advice.
I was looking the other day and found FATXplorer along with a few other utilities which might be useful.
I ignored the FATXplorer at first as it is a paid-for utility and this is going to be only a one-off use:
however it appears to have a good reputation, and has a 7 day free trial, so I may try it, thanks.

Try to sign into the account and when you see the "account name" signed in message at the bottom of your screen press the guide button straight away to bypass the remember me part.

PM me if you have any other issues.
