Hi All -

I am interested in a DIY 4K video editing PC in $750 range. I found this website but the motherboard seems to be out of stock everywhere [MSI B450 Tomahawk Max - $115].
[Minimum post requirement for links]
Anybody have a suggestion for a comparable motherboard or another build altogether in the same price range that will support 4K editing?

Or, perhaps, does anybody have different preferred rig specs in the $750 range?

I did one build 5-6 years ago and while it was scary it was very satisfying when I booted it up! It worked the first time out and is still going strong but the rig will not support Premiere Pro CC 2020, hence the new build.

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor ($172.39 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: ASRock B450M PRO4 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard ($83.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 Memory ($69.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Crucial P2 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive ($64.99 @ B&H)
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER 6 GB TUF GAMING OC Video Card ($229.99 @ Best Buy)
Case: Cooler Master MasterBox NR600 (w/o ODD) ATX Mid Tower Case ($69.98 @ Amazon)
Power Supply: SeaSonic S12III 500 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply ($64.99 @ B&H)
Total: $756.31

Although, I would still try to spend the extra $30 for a B450 Tomahawk MAX. Stock of all MSI mobo's seems pretty iffy right now though. The MSI B450 Gaming Plus MAX and MSI X470 Gaming Plus MAX are also worth considering, if you can find one in stock for $100-120.

Thanks for the reply!

What about an additional internal drive for storing data? What I currently use is a CRUCIAL M500 120 GB SSD as my boot drive and an internal WD Caviar Black 1.5TB for data storage. I'm assuming since it's 5+ years later I could get an even larger HDD for a nominal price. Any suggestions there?

If I opt for 32GB of RAM, is there a preference of (4x8) to (2x16)? Advantages, disadvantages? I've read that the (2x16) gives me an option for adding more RAM later. Is this correct thinking?

While I like the mesh front of the case you suggested, I see the USB ports are on the top. Strange question: would that not invite more dust to settle in the ports? What are your thoughts on an Antec Three Hundred Two case? I currently use one of those and it does have a mesh front to the case which I have heard is good for airflow.

I would re-use your current HDD+SSD. I'd also definitely be buying a nice new SSD with the system. 480-512GB at least, but I'd honestly even aim for a 1TB SSD if you can spend the extra $50ish. You will probably want to add another HDD for mass storage, but you can always do that later when you have some more cash. Just grab a 7200RPM HDD in whichever capacity you require.
I wouldn't even bother with a 1TB HDD, especially since 2TB is barely any more expensive. $55-60 for a 2TB HDD;

or you can look at larger capacities if you want/need.

2x16. 4 DIMMs puts more stress on the IMC than 2 DIMMs, so it's easier to run higher frequency, tighter timings, etc with 2 DIMMs rather than 4. It also gives you room to upgrade more easily in the future, since you'll have 2 unused DIMM slots.

It's not something that would really be any concern unless you live in a ridiculously dusty house.

It's an old case, and significantly lower quality than the Cooler Master NR600. Like night and day difference.

My current CRUCIAL 120GB SSD (boot drive) has only about 15 free GB left in the current configuration so I'm thinking I will stop using that and just get a new boot drive. If I use a 2TB HDD for data storage, why do you suggest I aim for a 1TB SSD rather than a 500 GB SSD for a boot drive? Would that not be overkill or am I (probably) not seeing something in your suggestion?

And the video card you suggested is out of stock. Any suggestions on a comparable GPU? I've just purchased the MSI B450 Tomahawk Max MOBO and AMD Ryzen 5 3600 CPU.

I would definitely still get a new SSD. No reason not to re-use your current 120GB SSD though, more storage never hurts.

Use the HDD for mass storage, and use the SSD for your OS, as well as any games/programs you install. 1TB NVMe SSD's are just really good value right now IMO, so if you can manage to grab one, I would. Otherwise, the 500GB SSD I recommended is fine.

Any of those will do just fine.
