Depends on the country but personally if you're able to goto war/be conscripted you should be able to do what you want to your own body, Lack of education and a unhealthy drinking culture are far more of the cause of drinking related illnesses than the age at which they were legally allowed to consume it.

From the uk an I personally think 21 would be a good raise would stop some people from getting into other drugs but then again mabey not who knows, but if people want to to drink they will find a way to drink a age limit won't stop them most my mates started drinking at the age of 11 was easy enough to get a carryout ask your ma or da for a few quid for the shop 6 or 7 people do that and youve anywhere from £10-£30 some people would save up for a week or two doing odd jobs cleaning cars cutting grass my mates smoked dope/weed/herbal, all my mates started smoking ciggaretts at the age of around 10 basically every one i knew did now they are on them non stop, shops would just sell you what ever you asked for half the time you say thier for your parents an your good to go, ive seen 7 year olds go into a shop and buy shandy bass walking out drinking it, but that was around 12 years ago offies and shops seemed to have caught on now and are more strict which is good and they don't let kids buy ciggaretts now and offies generally don't let you buy lots of items last time i went to buy a carry out for me an my mate i got told i could only pick 2 items because they dont want people buying lots incase a kid is outside an has just paid or asked you to buy them drink.

Which can be annoying but is also pretty good making it a tad bit harder for kids to drink even tho its not working as well as they'd hope or think it does, still see kids out drinking at young ages which is bad craic because alcohol is the biggest gatway drug imo, ive seen mates start getting on all sorts while drunk ruining thier mental health.

In America, the legal drinking/purchasing age is 21 and I think that is an appropriate age.

I don't think raising it further would matter much in the end and as for lowering it, nah. Personally, now just me personally, I don't care what the age is, if you're like 14 and want to go get drunk, go right the hell on ahead and see if you still want to drink after you come down from a hangover. Firm believer in cause and effect for when people want to try something, most kids will joke about how they'll want to get wasted or be a huge smoker, then they try it and they swear off of it. My grandfather did this with my brother and I and as far as I know until I left my mothers house, he was the most annoying person as he was against the thought of alcohol or any sort of substances, simply from what our grandfather did. Whenever we got caught trying to sneak alcohol or cigarettes, guess what, sitting your ass down and drinking until you throw up or smoking the whole pack. Awful, would have been enough to keep me away if I didn't let a little garbage depression get in my way a few years back.

Anyways, getting off topic, back to it.

1. As tired as this argument gets, it still does hold some weight. If you're allowed to sign up for the military/army at 17 in America, whatever, go pass your training and be shipped out as combat units by 18 -- potentially even legally kill a person, yet if you're caught drinking or smoking, you are doing an illegal activity, that just doesn't make sense to me.

2. Like I said at the start, it doesn't matter. You could make alcohol be age 40 before you can drink, give it a few months and test people and there will be traces of alcohol. People are still going to do what they want. I'll use Russia for an example. When I was growing up there, purchase age of alcohol was 16. They switched it 18 to buy alcohol, but public drinking is 16 to this day. 16 year olds still end up buying alcohol on a daily basis like nothing has changed. Another thing we do if you have bad alcoholic trouble, this little implant thing into your stomach that is a device that either shocks you, gives you bad cramps/the shits or will make you throw up on the touch of alcohol. Guess how many people push through that thing just to drink. A lot, this is why there is a legit percentage for males that die before 25 in Russia. There are what some people would call "torturous" methods to stop drinking and people still push through it just to drink.

3. I somewhat believe raising the age past 21 would create some boogie ass black market for alcohol. Not like during the prohibition era, but still something where some dude ends up getting killed because he wasn't able to pay his little fine for his purchase.

4. While I firmly believe that turning 18 doesn't magically make you an adult in the sense of how developed your brain is, realistically you're not going to fix stupid. If a person just is incompetent or refuses to use their brain, give up on them and use your time better. I would much rather a 16 year old who likes to chug a few glasses of wine with their steak who is at least intellectually capable than someone who is an utter jackass with their mentality and are like near Mormon when it comes to alcohol. Does alcohol change your perspective, absolutely, but if you're stupid sober, you're stupid drunk, that's already wasted effort trying to fix that.

I don't think it should be raised any further, if you've made the choice that you want to drink, you're going to end up drinking and do what you want until you become physically forced not to, be that rehab, medication or any other action. Lowering it, nah, best to just avoid that shit storm of debate between states or people and focus on stuff that is a little more important within the country. I firmly believe in letting people punish themselves to see if they want to choose to take up an interest beforehand, but there's a difference in letting a younger person try alcohol vs having free access to buy it and do what they want. There's no fixing stupid and wasting that time and energy on someone who isn't grown up in the head is more trouble than it's worth, regardless of what happens, if someone wants to drink, they're going to drink regardless, people go to stupid lengths for something they want to do. We can all recall skipping class, leaving home late at night, staying up way past your bedtime to play "1 more game" and so on, even though we knew there were consequences, same thing with alcohol and other substances. If a person wants it, an age limit isn't going to stop them, just now they may feel inclined to abuse it harder to make it worthwhile since it's not so freely available and need to make it worth their time/money.

Take this from an alcoholic, raising the age doesn't matter and wouldn't fix a thing. All it would do is stop the people who were already unsure of drinking to begin with or the people who are legit paranoid of getting in trouble, but the people who already made the choice, whether they already drank before in their life or not, will still do it however they may find.

I'm kinda torn on it, on one hand I think it's silly that at 18 you can sign up to go fight and possibly die in a foreign country but not buy a legal beer. On the other hand, while legally an adult, most 18 year olds are in no way responsible enough to handle something like alcohol, brain development and personality wise.

The argument can also be made though that Alcohol being 21+ in US leads to a culture of binge drinking at younger ages (i.e 16 year olds pounding a fifth of fireball on a friday night and ending up with alcohol poisoning because it's ~taboo~ and they feel they have to drink as much as possible when they have the opportunity to). Personally I don't think America's drinking culture could handle the age being lowered to 18, it's disgusting already how often you hear kids bragging about driving while drunk and doing other irresponsible things while intoxicated. Alcohol is also an incredibly unhealthy vice when used frequently/in large amounts. If it was a new invention, governments would be scrambling to ban it, it's basically an opiate (effect wise), and that's not something you want 16-20 year olds using even more than they already do.

Then again, literally an 18 year old college student either knows someone that is 21, or that has a fake ID, there's nothing to really do to stop people from drinking before they're of age.

I think you can point to many other countries where a lower drinking age has lead to alcohol being less taboo for youth and more responsibly handled, but I think in the US it's just not possible and should stay 21 or even be raised.
