So I bought one of those "plastichrome" shells on Ebay. I swapped out my original controller shell with the new chrome shell, and immediately noticed my controller kept resetting (disconnect then reconnect repeatedly).

Thinking the shell's chrome paint (or whatever they use) must've somehow been conductive, I put the original bottom half back on, leaving all of the other aftermarket chrome stuff. A conductivity check with a multimeter later confirmed that the shell is not conductive, so obviously nothing is grounding out.

I did, however notice the controller wasn't disconnecting nearly as often after putting the original bottom half on.

Any ideas as to what may have happened? Are the boards prone to ESD damage?

Check battery pack or connections to the board? Maybe try another controller?

i had something similar to where it would disconnect and reconnect i found it to be the vibration motors making the controller lose connection i turned them off via the settings and works fine now. maybe a loose connection/screw?

Sounds like when you put it back together you put a little bit too much pressure on the sync button. n now its sensitive to the touch. i would bet if you resetted the sync button it may have better success, also leaving the screws just a turn loose instead of as tight as possible may loosen some of the pressure inside the controller n may be enough for ya.

Both good answers. I'll have to give those a check.

The only thing about the pair button though, once that button is pressed you have to press the pair button on the console to complete the connection. I don't think that would explain the auto reconnect. It's almost as if the controller lost power momentarily. I did, however, notice that the new pair button (housing button) didn't mesh up cleanly the first time I put it together. They don't come attached like they do on the original shell. If that button is broken I might as well toss the controller. My hands are not steady enough to replace that tiny of a button. It's SMT anyway.

Hopefully it's just a loose motor connection. These controllers are expensive even used.

Well. I guess my controller is done for. Problem still exists after checking connections and the pair button, and checking the tightness of the screws. The pair button doesn't seem broken, so the only thing I have left to go on IMO is ESD.

So I bought a second used controller to experiment with (so I'm not without a working controller), and to my surprise, this controller experienced the same issues when swapped out with the new, aftermarket controller shell.

One thing I noticed this time was the board is very unsteady when resting on the top half as opposed to how it rests on the stock shell. Any pressure on either side of the board causes it to come out of the shell-that doesn't happen with the original top half. It rests completely solid on the top half. I should clarify here..when I say the board is unsteady, it is correctly seated as far as it can go.

I also noticed that on my untouched stock controller, any pressure on the front area where the charge cable connects causes the same symptoms I'm experiencing with the aftermarket shell.

So, these boards must be very sensitive to pressure at certain points. I suppose now I'll have to compare the two top halves a little closer and see what's different about them.

If any of you have any experience with these aftermarket shells, I could use any insight you might have.

So I believe I've figured it out. Something about whatever they use to make plastic look chrome blocks the bluetooth signal between the controller and console, and basically heavily degrades the controllers range. I noticed it when I kept moving the controller to a specific location and experiencing a disconnect.

As long as I stay in a closer range (which is easy in a bedroom), the controller works fine.

This in my opinion explains why Microsoft never released a fully chrome controller (I believe Microsoft made one with only the top half chrome probably because of this issue).

This is why I never trusted aftermarket shells. Had 2 Xbox360 controllers that "quit working" after throwing on aftermarket shells. I returned them to the buyer on Ebay and he informed me "some of his shells had been sprayed in a factory with metallic flaking which had contaminated paint sprayed on the shells causing conduction issues". Wish I would've seen your thread earlier so I could have left input I'm just not as active anymore sorry. Make sure you let that seller know you've experienced this issue so maybe they can correct it for others in the future.
