Hey guys so I needs some help big time. Yesterday I was driving to work and just as I got in the road to my job my engine starting making a clicking noise and if I accelerate it becomes more intense it is to the point where I am sure if I stomped on the gas I'm sure my engine would blow. Now here's the kicker my check engine light is not on. I had my boss come out and take a look he recommended I change the oil so we did so. Nothing changed. He then told me it sounds like it could be something to do with one of the pistons inside my engine.

So I'm looking for any information I can get as I'm not very savvy with cars.

Is this fixable? Can I just replace the piston or do I need to replace the entire engine? How much may this end up costing me? Any other information would be appreciated thanks!

Does it get louder as you bring the rpm up? If it's a clicking sound then most likely it would be in the valve train. Might be a valve spring. I'm surprise it ain't throwing a code tho. The next thing I'll do is do a compression check. That way you would know what cylinder its in.

Yes it does intensify when I bring the rpm up. And I would describe it as a clicking sound. So your pretty on point Pm inbound.

If you could post a video of your car on youtube and put it in your topic, that would help a lot. A ticking noise could be soooo many different things. Could be internally, or something as simple as spark plugs since those can make a ticking effect. But it's always hard to tell what anything is unless there's a good diagnosis or we see it in person. Hearing it will help a little, but like I said, every mechanic would have to do a diagnosis or get a really good description of what's happening, otherwise we won't be able to help much. We could tell you a LIST of things to check, but we can never be sure unless we're there ourselves. But, again, if you could make a video and post it on here, of somebody revving your car and you have the camera by the engine bay, might get a better idea of what's going on. As for your pistons making a clicking noise, I would doubt it's that, but depending on the vehicle and engine size, you could be looking at anywhere from $500-$2000.. (not including labor) and A LOT more for diesels pickups.

Spoke to my dealer and he thought it was the spark plugs as well. Just had it towed to the shop so I guess I will see what happens from there. Thanks for the help!

How many miles are on it? That there sounds more like a rod knock. I think it's too violent to be in the valve train. Usually if you catch it in time you can just replace the rod bearings and be good. But most of the time you have to get oversized rod bearings and get the crank turned to match the bearings. By the time you do that you'll probably be better off buying a short block and having it installed. You won't find out if it is a rod knock untill you pull the oil pan and see if you can move the rod up and down on the crank shaft. But it could be something else too so I would still have it looked at.

Yeah sounds like rod knock to me, probably going to end up being a pretty pricey incident.

I hate the sound of that but hopefully my mom isn't right she's telling me I need to replace the entire engine. Which won't wven be worth it.

Thread can be closed. Gonna get my engine replaced as that's what the dealer and mechanic recommended.
