I cant tell you what to get, but i can suggest what NOT to get. Don't go with any Chinese brand, like Tao Tao. I got a 125cc bike, and the day i got it, the back tire spun on the wheel, and I have had nothing but trouble with it since

personally i like dual sport style bike, so that you can ride anywhere, on road and off. I'd suggest a Honda bike. they run forever.

Should I start with a semi automatic, or just go straight for gears?

My first bike was a r6 despite everyone telling me it was to much bike for a first bike. Honestly if I would have gotten anything smaller I would of been over it in a week. That's just my experience though.

Go straight with gears, no point slowly learning

I'd go with straight gears.

When I passed my CBT I looked at bikes like the Yamaha WR125 X as I'm a taller guy and being on the smaller bikes didn't look right. However due to the cost of the WR I ended up going with a Yamaha XT125 X, was a great bike. I'd agree with the above comment of avoid the cheap brand bikes and stick to the main brands.

Aprilla rs125 or sx125 if you like supermoto. Be prepared for them powerbands. You'll be the coolest kid on the block with these.
