I run windows 10 pro 64 bit on a new pc I just finished building today. Was gonna get an RTX 2080 but my budget only allowed for a GTX 1070ti. Also have 32GB ram, a 500GB m.2 drive that I use as drive C, I boot from it and have my OS installed on that m.2 drive. I also have a HDD with 5TB capacity...or so i thought.

Anyway, for some reason I went to "this computer" I didn't see my HDD anywhere. I left clicked on the start icon, went to disk management and found my HDD there, but after messing around I was only able to get 1.99TB of usable hard drive space. I now see my HDD icon in "this computer" and it says 1.99TB space available.

...what happened to my other 2TB???? I feel i just got ripped off. Anybody know how I can gain access to my other 2TB that I paid for?

Here is the HDD that I have:

Have you tried extending the partition? You can do this by going to Disk Management and right clicking the drive then clicking extend.

Yeah when i right click on it, i have the option to extend volume or shrink volume. The shrink volume is highlighted, but the extent volume is not, so when i click on extend volume, nothing happens.

Did you partition the drive?
Have you stored anything on the HDD yet?

Open disk management and see what you can do. You might have to re-format and/or re-partition the drive. If it's partitioned as MBR, you might want to try partition as GPT instead. Same for NTFS/exFAT for formatting.

If none of that works, I'd probably just try to make 2/3 separate partitions of whatever capacity, just to have access to the storage- so like, 2 x 2TB partitions, and a 1TB partition maybe. If that still doesn't work, I'd just RMA the drive probably.

Possibly was a drive previously used. Here's what I'd do.

Open CMD
>diskpart
>list disk
>Select disk X
>clean

Go back to disk management in windows and it should say "unallocated"

Right-click, new simple volume. Spam next and make sure the size is what it should be.

You should be good to go.

Here's some screen shots in disk management:

the 5'th image shows what happens when i right click and try to format the hard drive. The second, 500MB is a M.2 drive that I have my OS and a couple games on. I got nothing stored on my 5TB HDD right now.

Ok, I explored this option and this is what happens:

1.

tinypic.com/r/14m4e50/9

2.

tinypic.com/r/qxrpj6/9

3.

tinypic.com/r/nn4gvs/9

4.

tinypic.com/r/28mjr4w/9

5.

tinypic.com/r/118hcn6/9

Note: I did this both CMD methods(as user and as admin) and got the exact same results.

What is stumping me here is that "disk 0" is the 500TB HDD and "disk 1" is my m.2 drive. When i first booted up this computer to install the operating system, I made sure to make the m.2 drive(disk 1) my C drive. I also made sure that the operating system and my two games installed there.

Here is proof that I did that:

tinypic.com/r/2rnfpcm/9

and as you can see, my m.2 drive shows here but not my HDD. I did manage to get my HDD to show here one time(not sure how i did it though) and it only showed about 2TB worth of storage available. Now the HDD isn't even showing again.

Right click and delete volume you should then have all 5TB unallocated.

Then you can format the unallocated space. I'd format as NTFS first, and that will probably be default, but if you're still having issues maybe try formatting as exFAT.

Now all you have to do is partition the drive. Partition it how you please, but AFAIK MBR is limited to 2TB, so it looks like that's what has happened here. Partition as GPT instead and you should be good to go with all 5TB. I'm gonna go ahead and recommend not partitioning it all as one big 5TB drive though.

You need to assign a drive letter to the partitioned HDD to be able to access it in Windows Explorer. So for each partition, you would assign it a drive letter while you're partitioning the drive. Otherwise, right click the partition in disk management and "Change Drive Letter".
