Synopsis:
Tokyo has become a cruel and merciless city--a place where vicious creatures called "ghouls" exist alongside humans. The citizens of this once great metropolis live in constant fear of these bloodthirsty savages and their thirst for human flesh. However, the greatest threat these ghouls pose is their dangerous ability to masquerade as humans and blend in with society.

Based on the best-selling supernatural horror manga by Sui Ishida, Tokyo Ghoul follows Ken Kaneki, a shy, bookish college student, who is instantly drawn to Rize Kamishiro, an avid reader like himself. However, Rize is not exactly who she seems, and this unfortunate meeting pushes Kaneki into the dark depths of the ghouls' inhuman world. In a twist of fate, Kaneki is saved by the enigmatic waitress Touka Kirishima, and thus begins his new, secret life as a half-ghoul/half-human who must find a way to integrate into both societies.

Story:
In the world of Tokyo Ghoul there are two types of species. Humans, and Ghouls. Ghouls are only able to stay alive by eating human beings, and the only other way they can calm there blood thirst is by drinking coffee. Coffee is the only thing Ghouls can enjoy because eating other human food makes them sick, and can actually kill them. The main character Kaneki is a college freshmen, he one day goes out with a girl. It turns out she is a ghoul, she tries to eat him and in the process she dies. Kaneki wakes up in the hospital with her organs in his body. He is now a Half Ghoul, and has to fight for what he believes in. While he struggles to maintain both sides of his body.

Characters:
The main character is Kaneki, as you follow his life story you will find out his mom died while he was very young. This anime pulls you in as you see him struggle, not being able to eat his favorite foods, while trying to hold his sanity together. There is also Touka, there is a small story following her. She is a Ghoul who works at a coffee shop. She also is known as "Rabbit".

Sound:
The music in this anime is amazing, you can watch the Intro and still try to figure out each detail in the anime. It makes you want to memorize the song that will continue to play in your head.

Art:
The art is quite beautiful, and the backgrounds are perfect for anyone to have on there phone, or desktop. The only drawback is when they try to censor the bloodbath that happens in the show. It can take the enjoyment out of the show.

My Rating:
A Solid 7

I love the Tokyo Ghoul series as a whole, but I think season 1 was pretty weak. I understand the need for exposition and character development but so much of it was just Kaneki crying and feeling sorry for himself. Of course it makes the final 2 episodes much more pronounced -- I still believe it would be much better overall if they got over the sob story in 5 episodes instead of 10.

Other than that, a great anime. Yes it's mainstream but I just love the dark horror-esque vibe it has.

I think the first season is good, the second season answered some questions. But the biggest one was
the ending. Until season 3 came out of course.

I've picked a few of the manga up lately and I can definitely say its great. Not so much that it's different, but there are a lot of little things that they leave out in the anime which gives you a greater picture of whats going on in the world.

Plus of course the manga is uncensored so we get those sweet sweet scenes.
