Hi All

Recently got back into gaming and started playing a game called Vermintide 2. So far I have had to turn off most settings or kept it at low to keep framerate at 60fps which is fine. However when a lot of enemies swarm the map the fps drops down to below 30fps making it not completely unplayable but relatively laggy.

I would like to upgrade my computer to try and keep fps at 60fps at all times and perhaps has an increase in visual quality. Below are the specs of my computer

My current spec is:

LG Monitor 2560x1080 60Hz

GeForce GTX 760

Intel i5-4670k @3.40GHz (i5-Sabre GTX 760 4.40GHZ Overclocked 4670k is the description when bought)

24GB DDR3 RAM

Bitfenix Ghost Black Midi Tower Case

Gigabyte Z87-HD3 Motherboard

My question is, is it even worth upgrading from what I already have or should I just buy a new PC in a few years time? Personally I do not want to spend too much money at this point in time.

If upgrading would help which part will affect performance most and which components will be compatible with the parts I already have?

I am quite new to pc building and have always wanted to build my own PC when I can afford to do so. So far my experience has only been adding RAM and changing the fans.

Thanks

You could defo do with a GPU upgrade and it's the most obvious upgrade path IMO.

What budget do you have to work with?

Without a budget, you shouldn't be asking about this stuff.

A good GPU will cost you close to 1K USD(That's a 1080 kind of GPU)

You can get a lower one for cheaper. I have a 980Ti and it can do 4K. I think you can find those for 6-700.

I would upgrade, if I were you. At the very least, the GPU for now. As long as you aren't into hardcore gaming(4K, 60FPS, Etc), you should be fine with your current build.

Depending on the CPU you get, when, it could also mean new RAM and a new MOBO(Depending on chipset) which would only add to the cost of things.

So you copied everything Adam said. Kewl... 980Ti, why would he look at an old architecture for that 'price'?

We cannot offer suggestions if you don't have a budget. Also what currency are we working with? You mentioned one game, what other games are you playing. Not budget, no recommendations...

Probably around 200 great British pounds for a GPU, as mentioned I'm not looking at top of the range, just enough to play games more smoothly without massive dips in frame rate.

Kaizen99 wrote My question is, is it even worth upgrading from what I already have

Depends. Do you want to spend money for better performance right now, or would you rather wait until more of your system is out-dated, and build an entirely(or almost entirely) new PC?

Kaizen99 wrote If upgrading would help which part will affect performance most

Depends what you're being limited by currently. Most likely a GPU upgrade, but your CPU could potentially be holding you back. At most though, for CPU, grab a used i7-4770k or i7-4790k. That might not be required though.

Kaizen99 wrote which components will be compatible with the parts I already have?

We'd be here for days listing components that are compatible with the hardware you already have. It doesn't work that way. You'd need to give us a budget and currency to work with, as well as tell us exactly what you want to achieve with an upgrade. Is it just an upgrade for better performance in this one game?

MushroomElm wrote A good GPU will cost you close to 1K USD(That's a 1080 kind of GPU)

uwotm8? Since when? GTX 980 can be had for around $200, and would be a significant upgrade from his GTX 970.

MushroomElm wrote 980Ti... I think you can find those for 6-700.

Eh, 700 pesos maybe? 980Ti's haven't been anywhere near $700 for well over a year. You can easily find a used 980Ti for $300-350.

Kaizen99 wrote Probably around 200 great British pounds for a GPU, as mentioned I'm not looking at top of the range, just enough to play games more smoothly without massive dips in frame rate.

I'd probably just grab a new GPU. Check reddit.com/r/hardwareswapUK and maybe even check uk.webuy.com
You can usually find pretty good deals on one, or the other. Try to grab a used GTX 970, you should be able to find one for under £150-160. Maybe stretch a bit more for a GTX 980 if you find one reasonable priced(less than £200). Either of these will be a fairly significant upgrade from your current GPU, and you should be able to fetch £40, maybe £50 for the GTX 760 if you sell that once you upgrade. I run a 2560x1080 monitor with a GTX 970 and have no problems, so that or a 980 would be a good option for you IMO.

CPU should be fine for now, but you can always swap it out for a 4770k/4790k, like I said. 4790k's have been going for around £190 recently, 4770k's should be a bit less(£175ish) since it's basically the same CPU but slightly slower and a bit hotter(shitty TIM).

We don't know your PSU, so that would be useful to know, for sure. You might want to upgrade that if you're upgrading GPU, but the GTX 970 and 980 are pretty efficient cards so you might be okay. That said, it sounds like you have a pre-built system which are notorious for coming with shitty PSUs.

Also, I see no mention of an SSD, add an SSD to the system if you haven't already done so.

980Ti is still a viable card to use. It will play any modern game and it won't break your bank like a 1080Ti would. With no budget prior to me posting, I had nothing to go on. So I told OP what I had and about what it could be found for. A quick search for 980Ti shows it anywhere from 450 on Ebay to 630 on Amazon.

Obviously, I did say what Adam said. Only I expanded on it a little. Explaining that a new GPU should be OPs first buy, as a new CPU could lead to a new set of RAM, a new Mobo and even a new PSU. OP already stated OP did not want to spend too much, and those would definitely gouge the wallet.

Sorry I didn't fit exactly what you should have stated, Ad4m.

Thanks for the suggestions, this is what i've been looking for. I have had a look at Cex and they are selling 970 for £220 and £300 for the 980 in which case I may opt for the 980 since I never took into account selling my current card.

I have been looking on ebay also and they seem to have different brands of gtx, is there much of a big difference and which are the most affordable models?

My PSU is a Corsair CX750 would this be viable for a gtx980?

I have a 120gb SSD when the pc was first bought with a normal 1TB harddrive. Unfortunately 120Gb is way too little for the games to be installed on. Will adding an additional SSD make such a big difference?
