Hi,
I am looking for all possible advice about building workstation. This is my first time so I am very scared. ;) Some parts are pre-selected, for some I need your recommendation.

Budget: About 5k$
Purpose: VR Game Development, Unreal Engine, Maya, 3Ds Max,Blender, Zbrush, Substance Painter, Designer, B2M,and other 3d software, VR Gaming, Rendering, Photoshop, InDesign. Few times, there will be a time that PC will be left for few days to bake a game in Unreal Engine. Maybe even a week.
Priority:flawless performance and stability. I don't care about looks.

CPU -I am giving my preference to i9 7940x. I know that for rendering Xeon is recommended, but Rendering is not the main task for this workstation. Of course, if you have another point of view and strong arguments, do not hesitate to convince me

GPU - GTX 1080 Ti. I am pretty sure, that I don't want Quadro. But again - let's talk about it, if you are sure that I should get Quadro, please let me know.

MOBO:
Asus ROG RAMPAGE VI EXTREME, but I am open to other propositions.

RAM - Not specified, but I need fast 32GB RAMwith a possibility of expanding in 2 years.

SSD - Not specified. For now, Fast 500 GB will be enough.

HDD - Not specified. For now, Fast 3T will be enough.

Cooling - I will go forwater CPU cooling, maybe GPU as well. I want my parts to be cool and longstanding. I was thinking about NZXT Kraken X62 v.2 for CPU

Case -I prefer lightweight midtower, because this PC will have to travel few times in a year on game events, but again: If you think it's a bad idea, please let me know. First choice:Lian Li PC-J60WX

Power -Not specified, but I am considering SLI in the future.

Thank you for any comments

Assuming the $5k doesn't include peripherals since you never mentioned those. That said, if you don't have some top tier peripherals, use some of the $5k to upgrade those.

CPU: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] ($1089.49 @ SuperBiiz)

Total: $2192.92

Add a Titan V to this, and you're a little over $5k. The budget and use case calls for a Titan V IMO, unless you require peripherals within budget. You can save some money by grabbing a 7900x instead, or going with Threadripper.

Ah, this Titan V...

Do you think it's worth to wait a while until it will get cheaper? How much cheaper do you think 1080 will get when new series will be presented?

And, is it 850W not too little for power? I saw some power tests and GPU that I am considering can take about 400W

Thanks!

Is it worth waiting for a Titan V to get cheaper? Probably not. I cant answer that question for you though. Its up to you if you want to sit about and wait for a Titan V to hopefully drop in price.

No idea how much GTX 1080s will drop in price, if it all. There aren't even any signs of new GPUs coming any time too soon. Regardless of price, GTX 1080 is a bad card for your use case.

No, 850W is not too little. The system isn't going to be pulling more than 600W, overclocked.

The PSU is just to be safe, not needed, could go with an 850-60W and save some. Drop the two 5tb drives, and throw in a 3tb save some there. This was just for raid away purposes, i would think you would be doing something like that within this system.

This is overkill as is. The Titan V is not worth it IMO, not much of what you would be doing would be using tensor cores unless you plan on machine learning at some point. Even then the 1080ti/Titan Xp(not worth the price, it has been proven) would be fine.

If you really wanted to make this an off renderer, I would honestly go with a custom made server.

EDIT: buy a fan controller throw some deltas; if you deal with the noise, good airflow is a nice return.

Thanks.

I have also question about RAM, because I am confused.
Some people are advising me to get 2666 RAM will 1.2 v because Skylake-X works best with it and anything faster would require overclocking to achieve rated speed.
But there is other opinion, that for my needs, 3200 is the best. What do you guys think?

Also, a lot of people is convincing me to get AMD - Threadripper. I am now considering it, but I am scared of situation that guy is taking about in this video:

TL: DR guy it telling that there is only one ram that works flawlessly with AMD.

I am scared that situations like this will be more, I could be even not aware, because I am not a specialist....
