A court in the Norwegian town of Fredrikstad has jailed a local man for six months for purchasing a child-like sex doll online. It's the first such verdict in the country.

A 23-year-old man was detained after the customs services discovered a silicon sex doll, looking like a child, in a parcel and informed the police. The doll in question resembled the looks of a girl between 9 and 12 years of age and was priced at around 10,000 Norwegian kroner (more than $1,200).

A search at the man's home as part of the investigation also revealed 1,600 photos and 26 videos of child pornography on his computer. During the trial, which began October 30, the defendant acknowledged "both buying the doll and downloading and storing the abusive materials," the lawyers said, as cited by Fredrikstad Bald.

"I know it's wrong and that's something that's not going to happen again. I am ready to take a jail sentence," the man said in court as cited by Demokraten.

In their landmark verdict Friday, the judges ruled that the "doll portrayed a minor child in a particularly shocking way." According to the court, the seized sex toy "contributes rather to trivialize the sexualization of children, and collective prevention considerations argue for a strict judicial response that may act as a deterrent for such a market."

"Even if we cannot exclude the fact that the doll can act to some degree as a substitute for aggression, it is difficult to conceive that privacy interests can advocate for this product," the verdict read, as cited by AFP.

The six-month sentence was handed to the man for buying the sex doll, as well as for two counts of corruption of minors, who were younger than 16 years old. In 2014, the man reportedly filmed under the skirt of a six-year-old girl and also sent sexual messages to a young girl via Snapchat.

Norwegian customs services seized several child-like sex dolls last year, with the trend alarming the National Criminal Investigation Service (Kripos).

"Kripos estimates that ordering sex dolls designed as a child is an indication that those who order the dolls have a sexual attraction to children. Moreover, the dolls are very realistic and it is possible that sexual intercourse with the dolls can break down barriers to commit violence against children," the agency said in a statement, adding that protecting minors from sexual abuse was one of its top priorities.

This is very interesting to me because the ethics of this kind of thing comes up a lot in conversations about the future of artificial intelligence.

Is it ethically wrong to abuse an object that you own?
If not then this man has just been convicted for thought crime and because of what he could potentially do in the future, rather than what he has actually done.
If anything a rehab program would have been much more suitable for him.

I'd rather have people like him abusing inanimate objects than real children. The logic they are using here is incredibly flawed.

"Kripos estimates that ordering sex dolls designed as a child is an indication that those who order the dolls have a sexual attraction to children."

Yes, that's quite obvious.

"Moreover, the dolls are very realistic and it is possible that sexual intercourse with the dolls can break down barriers to commit violence against children,"

No, this is horrible reasoning. The people who buy these dolls already want to commit violence against children. If anything the doll is itself a barrier to that happening. The reason why they bought the doll is because they know it's wrong to commit violence against children but they feel like they need the doll as a barrier to stop them from doing it.
Not to mention the fact that all of the current evidence shows that pedophiles are programmed like that, you either have that compulsion or you don't. If you give this doll to someone who doesn't have that compulsion they aren't going to want to start sexually harassing children.

In essence:

If you give this doll to a pedophile you decrease the likelihood of them assaulting a child.
If you take this doll away from a pedophile you increase the likelihood of them assaulting a child.
If you give this doll to a regular person it won't affect them in any way except creep them out a little.

A few parts of this story rub me the wrong way and dont sit right with me. Firstly the making of the doll in the first place should either be illegal or you should have to see some sort of consultant in order to obtain one (for rehabilitation purposes). The sentence doesn't seem to be equal to the severity of the crimes committed, 1600 photos and 26 videos is a hefty amount and not something you can do without releasing its wrong.

The doll itself can be seen in two very different lights as shown by Cohle and the media; The desensitisation aspect I can understand since I imagine its like watching LiveLeak videos while growing up then working as crime scene clean up BUT in this situation it can lead to extremely serious actions and consequences for multiple parties. The barrier idea is something I would hope to be correct and I remember seeing a study from around a month back, it was of the Scottish uni's, that the general idea was to treat paedophilia as a sexuality but for it to still remain illegal and to use these dolls as a substitute. Honestly, some of the media nowadays must make it worse since even cartoon shows are walking a fine with children such as this utter shite:

Well i don't think the doll was from Norway as in the article it says it was discovered at customs which usually means it is a foreign import (likely form china)
