Honestly, I feel like in order to become an awesome member you have to make big contributions towards the community when in reality, an awesome member is someone with a great personality, someone who everyone loves with or without making these contributions.

Ive seen countless members who put there heart into this site, with no giveaways or freebies who leave as they think theyre not noticed.

Its very possible. I never did a giveaway on this site before I became moderator. You have to have your own personality and you have to be friendly. It goes outside this site too. You dont make friends by just posting. Go to the shout box, play Xbox, etc.

In my opinion, the only thing a person has to do on a discussion forum to be a good member of that forum is contribute to discussions in a meaningful way.

Reputation, premium memberships, cool looking avatars and banners, giveaways, and engaging in the shoutbox could all be non-existent in a member's daily activities on the forum.
As long as someone is putting effort into their posts and not spamming - I have a very different definition of spamming to what the TTG rules stipulate - that makes them a good member to me and I think there are a few others who see this website and others like it in the same way.

I think everything else serves only as decoration and to distract people from the simple fact that forums are made for conversations and that people would [should] much prefer a person to make 100 good quality posts that get a conversation going to a person gifting 100 people with gold.

It seems like this is becoming less and less true by the day now though.

Its not impossible, lets be honest how long was you a member for to become as popular as you are?;) also id like to add, most the known users are mainly the groups who mod for free. Which you cant deny that, not saying they dont deserve it as I praise people who contribute there own time towards giving to people and making the community what it is. I mean I went through a stage of being in the shout box a fair bit, now when I hop in there no one knows me. I like it, I feel like a ghost.
