Reuters wrote Saudi King Salman on Tuesday ordered that women be allowed to drive cars, ending a conservative tradition seen by rights activists as an emblem of the Islamic kingdoms repression of women.

The royal decree ordered the formation of a ministerial body to give advice within 30 days and then implement the order by June 24, 2018, according to state news agency SPA.

It stipulated that the move must apply and adhere to the necessary Sharia standards, referring to Islamic law. It gave no details but said a majority of the Council of Senior Religious Scholars, Saudi Arabias top clerical body, had approved its permissibility.

An hour after the official announcement in Saudi Arabia, a jubilant Saudi ambassador to Washington, Prince Khaled bin Salman, said it was an historic and big day in our kingdom.

I think our leadership understands that our society is ready. I think its the right decision at the right time, the ambassador said.

A lot of people are being confused that it was a "ban" that was lifted. There was no official law that banned women from driving, but it was deeply held religious beliefs prohibit it

In Saudi Arabia that is a distinction without a difference considering some women who violated this ban, or even advocated for the removal of the ban, were sentenced to lashings or imprisonment.

They have worse punishments for non-laws than most civilized countries do for things which are actually against the law.
Deeply held religious beliefs in Saudi Arabia aren't too far off ISIS' deeply held religious beliefs. They sing from the exact same hymn sheet, but Saudi Arabia have an appearance to maintain.

This is a step in the right direction but they're still one of the most backwards regimes on this planet and it'll be a long time before their deeply held religious beliefs when it comes to who can do what in society are distinguishable from anything but barbaric laws.

Welcome to the 20th century.

Now if only they would stop literally crucifying people for sorcery and witchcraft.

I seen this the other day. It doesn't surprise me that women aren't allow to drive in other countries. I'm glad they're allowed just a little more freedom though.

i never even knew that, but then again it might not be that bad in some situations, what makes it bad is the fact that they aren't allowed to do it
