KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
Authorities in Kansas City are investigating a suspicious package was found at an Internal Revenue Service building Friday morning.

Police were alerted to the incident at about 9:45.

Officers say workers at the building smelled an odor coming from a single package, found in a mail room, and that 13 people are feeling ill and have nausea or are vomiting.

At least two people have been taken from the building on a stretcher.

Ten were taken to an area hospital, eight of them were later released. Two people are still at the hospital suffering from respiratory issues.

The building is located at 333 W Pershing Road.

This is a developing story. Refresh this page for updates.

Hopefully this is just some prank with a stink bomb or a object that has gone off rather than some sort of chemical or biological attack.

Local unconfirmed sources are been told to "stay clear of the area for their own safety".

Has any more information been released about this? I've looked on Twitter and it seems there's absolutely no "news" reported about this, not even from the real news channels/stations.

I really, really hope that this was just some freak accident and not a deliberate attempt at people's lives with something as sinister as a toxic gas bomb.

Two of the 10 people who complained of nausea and vomiting were taken to a hospital and were in good condition.

A St. Luke's Hospital spokeswoman said those victims are in good condition. By 2:45 p.m., they had all been released from the hospital.

Dr. Aaron Kaus said, "They all came in. They were stable. They had symptoms such as eye irritation, chest tightness and shortness of breath, but all presented stable and were able to all be treated by EMS en route. They didn't have any gross contamination of any chemicals that we were aware of."

Kansas City Fire Department spokesman James Garrett said the fire department was checking for gasses and fumes, but investigators have not determined what was in the package that caused the symptoms. He says the package was isolated from the public. They have not said whether it was opened or not.

Garrett said the investigation has been turned over to the IRS and other federal authorities. It took the fire department about an hour and a half to turn the building back over after the initial call.

No other details have been released.

By the sounds of it everyone seems okay but the packages contents still have not been released.

Now I'm just intrigued into what was causing the workers to fall ill.

Anthrax would be my best guess - not a solid guess, but a guess - solely because it's something that has happened so many times with mail to government places; hell, I even believe a few YouTubers got poisoned with Anthrax opening mail from views. Smosh is the only one I can think of right now that had that happen to but I'm sure there is more.

The symptoms they displayed were right in line with Anthrax poisoning. Pain/tight chest feeling, shortness of breath, nausea. I don't believe throwing up is a side-effect, but given you get nausea, throwing up isn't too far off. The only thing that throws this whole guess down, is the odor. As far as I remember in the 3 known strains of Anthrax, there is no odor. HOWEVER, what brings that all back, is if it's been sitting in an envelope or package long enough, whatever is containing the Anthrax will start to display an odor, since Anthrax is a disease from a bacterium, that so happens to form spores. Dark area in a box, maybe envelope depending on the type, if it's traveling around a lot to different climates, mainly different humidity percentages or was sitting in a humid place for a few days before being shipped out, then that gives enough room for an odor on the package.

I really do doubt it was a stink bomb, I don't think a stink bomb would lead to 2 people being carried out on stretchers unless they smelt it and ran out the room or something and tripped on something. But just seeing a package without knowing who placed it or whats in it is really weird.

Stink Bombs can contain a range of chemicals such as Hydrogen sulfide which gives off a foul egg smell but its toxic when binding with iron in the mitochondrial cytochrome enzymes, thus preventing cellular respiration. Even low amounts of exposure can cause nausea, lack of breath and pulmonary edema.

EDIT: Just re-read the symptoms which was presented at the scene and they are all symptoms of acute Hydrogen Sulfide poisoning
