Synopsis
The browser game phenomenon comes to iOS!

Play online with players around the world as you try to become the biggest cell of them all!

Control your tiny cell and eat other players to grow larger! But watch out: players bigger than you will be trying to make you their lunch. Survive and eat long enough to become the biggest cell in the game!

With new controls developed especially for touchscreens, agar.io offers the same addictive gameplay that millions have already enjoyed on PC. Play online in free-for-all action and use splitting, shrinking and dodging tactics to catch other players - or avoid them! Use a variety of special secret skins with the right username!

Gameplay
agar.io is a web phenomenon at the moment, it is a JavaScript browser based game where you and other people control your own cell, you can roam freely around a 2D area picking up little balls of mass as you go along. As you collect mass, you grow bigger, and bigger, and bigger. When you play you lose mass, when you are as small as you are when you start, you hardly notice it but the bigger you get, the faster you lose mass. There are many different tactics in this game, you can feed other people or friends that you are playing with by shooting little balls of mass to them, making you lose mass and them gaining it. This can save both of your lives in situations, for example say your friend was being eaten by another player who was bigger than them, giving them that extra mass will make them bigger, and allow them to eat the opponent. Another strategy you can use is splitting; this will evenly split your mass into multiple balls, you are in control of both. Splitting will make your balls of mass smaller, so they are more vulnerable to attackers but as they are smaller they can move faster to get away from attackers. Another way splitting is used is if you are pursuing an opponent, when you split one of the balls of mass is launched ahead, this can be used to eat your opponents if you are much bigger than them. This is risky as it is difficult to tell if you are bigger than twice their size (as splitting will divide your mass in two and your balls of mass must be bigger than your opponent). In the game there are obstacles that you can use to your advantage, or be wary of. One of these would be green, spiky virus cells. If you are smaller than them, then you can hide in them safely out of view. If you are bigger than them however, getting too close to them will pop you and mass will fly everywhere. Even if you are bigger than the virus cell, you can still use them to your advantage. If an opponent is chasing you, being just small enough to fit in between two of these virus cells can block your opponent and save your life. Another thing you can do with the virus cells are eject mass into them; you can shoot little balls of mass off, and filling up the virus cells enough will cause them to explode sending sharp spikes off in all directions, popping nearby opponents and completely ruining their day.

Graphics
The graphics in this game are fairly basic as it is only a 2D game, but I think they suit the game very well. The cells are all circular shapes with some ripples on the outside depending on what they are doing, if the cells are being eaten then the shapes will change as if they are made of jelly. One thing that is unique about this game is the skins that you can be. When you start the game, you are prompted to choose a name. The developers of the game implemented certain skins, so when you have certain names, you get a skin. Some of these include 'wojak', 'doge', country names and many more. The overall flow of this game is really smooth, there are no points in the game that don't look as good as the rest.

Audio
One thing that brings this game down is the audio; or should I say lack of audio. I would expect this game to have some sounds with it, when you pick up mass, when you eat opponents, and maybe just some nice background music to go with the flow of the game. As this game does lack sound, people have made various scripts and mods to resolve this issue. There is a popular script called 'evergreen' which adds various sound effects, as you would expect. The Evergreen Chrome extension can be added [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Controls
There are a very small number of controls in this game, but you must be able to master them to play the game effectively. You move the cell around, you use your mouse, moving it up and down. To split into multiple cells of the same mass, you press space, and to eject little amounts of mass for feeding, or to escape a sticky situation you press W as many times as you desire. As I said, you have to be able to analyse your situation and know exactly when to initiate different controls, to give you the best outcome possible.

Facts
  • The iOS and Android versions of agar.io are developed by Miniclip despite them not being the creators
