Synopsis

The Crew is a revolutionary action-driving game developed exclusively for next-gen consoles. It takes you and your friends on a reckless ride inside a massive, open-world recreation of the United States.

Take part in a relentless ride to move up the ranks of the 510s, a gang grown around Detroit's illegal street-racing scene - making a rep for yourself on the underground-racing scene and ultimately taking down their activities all across the United States.

Maneuver through the bustling streets of New York City to lose the cops, cruise down sunny Miami Beach or trek through the breathtaking plateaus of Monument Valley. Each locale comes with its own set of surprises and driving challenges to master. On your journey you will encounter other players on the road - all potentially worthy companions to crew up with, or future rivals to compete against.

Plot

You play as Alex Taylor, a man on the run from Detroit Police Department. Once you lose the cops through strenuous hairpin turns and through narrow alleys, you meet up with Harry, a man hellbent on winning street races and living life on the edge. The scene after winning the initial race shows Alex's older brother, Dayton, founder of the 5-10 Motor Club, is murdered drive-by style by a man named Shiv, the new leader of the 5-10.

The rest of the story takes you around the United States, on missions to find and imprison Shiv. From the Midwest, to the Coasts, Alex must find and bring Shiv in. You start out with a Chevrolet Camaro, given to you by Harry during the first race, but are able to purchase and upgrade new cars throughout the story, making races more/less difficult depending on your choices. The different aspects of driving, (i.e. terrain), make the story well worth playing, furthermore adapting you to the different types of racing and events throughout.

Singleplayer/Multiplayer Campaign

Since The Crew is an online free-roam racing game, you are constantly given the option to invite/join Crews from around the world. This makes the campaign definitely more enjoyable completing events together with friends. Of course, you are given the option to play through the story on your own, but doing so part of a crew is well worth it. Trading tuning tips and car suggestions make the campaign seem more like a team effort. When I played through, seeming silly typing it out, my Crew stuck with the same color scheme throughout, distinguishing ourselves and setting apart from rival crews.

Playing through the campaign, I grew tired of the somewhat repetitiveness of how missions were set up. With any racing game there's only so much the developers can do. But with The Crew, it really seemed like they applied the cookie-cutter method, and ultimately I grew tired and somewhat bored of my purchase.

Comparing The Crew to similar timely titles such as Forza Horizon 2 is an easy task in the aspect of free-roam. They both have story lines, but with an franchise, The Crew being the first from the developers, Forza Horizon 2 very much so has the more detailed and respected opinion of myself. The Forza franchise has been around for quite some time, and this isn't their first time around the block.

Controls Setup

The Crew is like any other racing game in the sense of control layouts. You're given a basic set of buttons controlling very easy aspects of the car. They're comfortable and easy to learn. If you've ever played any sort of racing game on any console, you'll immediately figure out how to play The Crew. Racing games are like riding a bicycle, there's only so much to learn and retain, and once you do, future titles operate like clockwork.

Graphics Display

This game threw me at first. After seeing the trailers, I expected a very beautiful world to drive through and romp around in. Don't get me wrong, the game does look magnificent for a next-gen title. I blame myself partly, because I know developers and publishers want to entice their audience with trailers, and they really did so with The Crew. The game operates at 1080p/30fps, while the PC is operating at 1080p/60fps. To give you a good comparison on the graphics and feel of the game while you play, I would compare The Crew to the graphics of Need for Speed: Rivals while playing in a world from Forza Horizon 2, with different backdrops.

Conclusion

The Crew is what's to come from Ivory Towers. They've developed games in the past, and this certainly won't be their last racing game. They only have room to improve. It's not an easy task squaring up against titles such as Forza Motorsport and Need for Speed. Those guys have been fine-tuning their games for over a decade. For the first installment (I'm assuming), The Crew did not get my approval nor disapproval, it made me excited for what Ivory Towers has in store for us car enthusiasts.

I wish the story was a little more interactive, but it's a racing game, the emphasis is on the cars and driving fast. After playing through The Crew, I realized one thing all racing game developers need to implement, more cars and more customization. Don't take what I just wrote as stating The Crew is lacking cars and/or customization. But, being a car fanatic, and car lover, the more the merrier when it comes to being able to drive and enjoy the cars of your dreams.

Played the beta of the game, but couldn't get into it at all.

he cut-scenes were so scripted it was untrue, and it wasn't overall fun.

But nice review, just a let down of a game.
