Synopsis

Pixel Dungeon is a traditional roguelike* game with pixel-art graphics and simple interface.
Explore the depths of Pixel Dungeon, collect useful items, fight fierce monsters to find Amulet of Yendor (surprise!) - the ultimate artifact of this game world.

Gameplay

This is probably one of my favorite rpg games that came out for the android. Right in the beginning of the game you have 4 characters to choose from. Warrior, Mage, Rogue, and huntress which can only be unlocked by slaying the 3rd boss with any other class. Your progress is saved on every character which is great for when you want to pick up the game and play at anytime. Each character has their own abilities which can be used when traveling in the dungeon. From the warrior class that has 11 points of strength to the mage the starts with a unique wand of magic missile. Each level is randomly generated so you never know what's going to pop around in the next corner. The maps are fairly big allowing you to explore many secret tunnels and different levels in the dungeon. If you die in this game there are no checkpoints so you will have to start over in order to play again. Items and weapons are randomly generated as well as the enemies while playing. For example, a red potion might heal you at one instance and the next it might damage you. Your character also gets hungry while playing, so scavenging for food is a must for staying alive. Plants can drop many items that can help you on your journey. You can also grow many types of plants which will hold many effects that can be used in potions and more. What I really do like is how there is text on the bottom left side of the screen explaining everything that is happening whether you are fighting or scavenging for items. You can hold many items in your backpack as you play as well. On the first couple of floors the game is a bit easy with some enemies like rats that come along to fight you. But, as you delve deeper into the dungeon you will find many monsters ranging from skeletons to big bosses. There are no in app purchases or ads which is what I really love as well. Overall, this is a game you should definitely check out as it can provide you with countless hours of gameplay.

Graphics

The graphics in this game if you haven't noticed already is a 16-bit retro looking game. The game is viewed from a top-down perspective allowing you to look at your character and the surrounding map as you play. Tunnels and other rooms are vacant and show vegetation growing on the walls. Some rooms are completely dark while others have so much vegetation growing that it is blocking your view. It is quite cool seeing random rooms generated while playing. There is large amounts of detail put into the maps, items, and enemies making it a great looking game to play. Animations are very smooth and look really nice including when you are walking through plants or water. The look of the maps change from time to time depending on where you are in the dungeon. Overall, I think the graphics were really well designed and it made this game look fantastic.

Controls

The controls in this game are pretty nice and very sleek and simple. You simply walk around the levels by tapping on the ground either close to your character or from far away. In the backpack you can do many things from either equipping items, using them, or even dropping them. When encountering enemies you can hit them by tapping them or clicking the button on the bottom right side of the screen. You can search for items in rooms by clicking the magnifying glass button on the bottom left side of the screen. Other buttons on the bottom left side of the screen include the question mark button which shows the descriptions of all items you have or have seen and the timer button. Overall, the controls feel smooth to use and have little to no glitches from what I have experienced.
