Game Information
Release Date: July 18th, 2013
Developed By: 343 Industries
Publisher: Microsoft Studios
Platform: Windows 8, Windows Phone, Windows RT
Genre: Top-Down, Third Person Shooter

Synopsis

Halo: Spartan Assault takes place in a futuristic science fiction setting between the events of Halo 3 in 2553 and the events of Halo 4 in 2557, while the whereabouts of Master Chief were unknown. It follows the early Spartan Ops' missions against the Covenant alien species and gives more background to the human-Covenant conflict. Stationed on the UNSC Infinity, gameplay is through the perspective of Commander Sarah Palmer.

Gameplay

*This Review is based off the Windows 8 Version of the Game, and not on a Surface or Phone

To give you a tiny bit of background, I'm not really familiar with Third Person type of games, so this was definitely an experience. The game mechanics are pretty simple, and easy for you to recognize and get comfortable with. For the most part, it's pretty similar to any other PC Game out on the market, and playing this is a new experience because how its different than any other Halo titles. I figured it would be like Halo Wars, but thought it would be more similar than how it is. It includes a unique type of gameplay, but contains all these Halo elements to make it feel like a Halo game.

Starting off with how the controls work, as I said above, it's like your standard PC game. With several adjustments since you don't need to reload or anything like that in Spartan Assault, which I like since you can just shoot as you please. There aren't many controllers, perhaps around 4 other keys besides the ones you move with so as long as you can just understand your keyboard, then playing isn't that difficult, well, it shouldn't be. There have also been a lot of people saying that a Xbox 360 Controller should be integrated into this since it's style of gameplay but I for one like playing it WASD style. It's not that hard playing, a controller just isn't that necessary.

343 included some things in like in-game purchases where you can buy stuff for your Character and play with the items like Armor Abilities or Weapons. There are two types of these kinds of things, 1, Cr, this is where you have to actually buy it from a Paypal Account or by using your Credit card. You could buy things like Armor Abilities, a few Weapons, or even something new, which is a "Booster" (I'll tell you a bit about that later). On the other hand there is EXP, which is the same idea but you obtain this not from buying but by earning throughout the Missions. Getting things like medals, completing missions in a faster time, or completing challenges will help you get more EXP. This is actually not a bad system since it does help you out, only if you could buy the cR with money you have on your Microsoft Account, that would make it better.

To shed some light on the in-game purchases/items, one bad thing is that the items you buy, will only last for that one mission. Keep in mind there are 24 other missions, so you should really only use it if you absolutely need it since it can go by fast. I'll give you a list on what you can buy with CR :
Weapons -
Rocket Launcher
Spartan Laser

Armor Abilities -
Overshield
Seeker Drone

Boosters -
Score Booster
Damage Booster

So all those do is pretty much is enhance your gameplay, you don't need them, they're just there to help you out. As for the EXP, here are the weapons, AAs, and Boosters you could buy :
Weapon -
Sniper Rifle

Armor Ability -
Auto Sentry

Booster -
Shield Booster

Once again, unlike the Credits, getting things from the EXP section requires you to actually play and earn it.

There are a total of 25 Missions, which are categorized into 5 Sections. You earn stars based off the amount of points you received which could be obtained from getting medals like double kills, killing sprees, etc. as well as other things like how fast you complete it, or how many skulls you added to make the match multiplier increase. There is no set difficulty unlike all the previous titles in the Halo games, so the only thing that'll really make it harder is if you add skulls. The skulls were a great idea but only if you could add more than two, to make it even more challenging.

So, Actually playing as a Spartan is pretty neat since you could do quite a bit of stuff like Armor Abilities and those types of things. You can like jack vehicles and that type of stuff (except sometimes you can easily get splattered) but it's like you're actually playing Halo!, even though you are, but like 'Halo', Halo. Driving vehicles isn't pretty hard at all except the Scorpion was a bit challenging since I don't understand it, and how you could just use your turret and Cannon at the same time is great. Sort of like Halo CE/Halo 2 (whichever it was where you can do that).

To conclude this section, I can tell you that the gameplay is really smooth, and it's great. As long as your PC doesn't suck then running this game should be no problem for you whatsoever.

Graphics

The graphics aren't bad at all, better than most games on Windows, maybe even all of them. They did an excellent job creating the cut scenes for the game since they're actually better than a lot of the cut scenes you see on Xbox 360 Games. Although, they aren't very long, and there's not that many of them. The weapons and vehicles look pretty similar on how they did in Halo 4 (except there are a few vehicles/weapons that weren't in H4 and were in other Halo games or described at least). The elites, grunts, drones, brutes, etc. look pretty recognizable so that was something I liked.

Rating

9/10

Finally, I think if you have a spare $7.00, you should just purchase this Halo title and give it a shot. If you think it's pretty dumb just try it out, you may like it. I was only purchasing it for the Achievements, and it was actually pretty fun right when I started the Tutorial. Keep in mind controller support is likely to be added somewhere in August. Sorry this review couldn't be longer, but that's pretty much all there is to it.

I can see how this may have taken a "little" while to write. Not bad though, given the amount of time writing it.

I really enjoyed reading this review, good job!
I am considering buying this, I was first steered away because it was 7.00, but it looks really fun and I would like to try it.
I guess we'll see.

Ah nice, I'm waiting for it to release on Xbox 360. For now I could just finish getting gold stars on the missions I need to get it on.
