UFOs wrote Yes, its true that Crackdown comes with the ability to play the Halo 3 multiplayer beta. However, its also true that Crackdown is a fun, albeit short title that will keep you satisfied until another free-roaming game is released on the Xbox 360.

Similar to True Crimes gameplay, youre playing on the side of the good guys and not pulling off random crimes. This nets you backup from time to time as well as the reprimands of your superiors for harming innocents. While many features in Crackdown seem to be inspired by Grand Theft Auto, it also features some truly remarkable ideas we have yet to see in a free-roaming game.

Massive environments and explosions are commonplace.



For one, you are in the shoes of a genetically-enhanced clone. You have the power to evolve your skills as you go through the game by simply performing certain tasks. When you complete these tasks, orbs appear for you to collect. Your attributes are broken up into five skills: driving, agility, firearms, explosives, and strength. If you ever kill an innocent person, your skills will decrease.

Your driving skill controls how well cars handle when youre behind the wheel, as well as the top speed. By running over baddies and finishing time trials, you earn driving orbs. Driving is probably the least-used skill, as you can get just about anywhere on foot just as quickly.


Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound...



Agility governs how fast you run and how high you jump. Agility orbs are scattered about on the higher buildings of the city, and foot races test your quickness. In the beginning of the game three quarters of the city will be out of reach, but as your skill goes up, your character will be able to bound over twenty feet into the air and outrun some cars.

Being skilled in firearms means your aim is better and your guns do more damage. Youll also be able to train your sights on different body parts of your foes to disable them in one way or another. By simply defeating criminals with guns, your firearms skill will increase. This is obviously one of the most important skills, as being accurate during the many firefights in the game can keep you alive.

Grenades, rocket launchers, grenade launchers, and any thing else that goes boom uses your explosive skill. As you build this up by defeating enemies with the mentioned devices, the blast radius of the following explosion will become larger and will do more damage. This is a tricky skill, as being too good with that grenade may destroy more than your intended target and get you in trouble.


Crackdown uses the popular Havok physics engine, with beautiful results.



Strength is the most important skill and the most fun to use. Throwing things at your enemies or using melee attacks on them increase your skill. Strength decides how much health you have, how powerful your hand-to-hand attacks are, and what size object you can throw. By building this up you will soon get the ability to pick up cars and other objects to hurl at criminals. Or you can just pick up a car with bad guys already inside it and throw it off the interstate.

Crackdown plays like a dream. The game only loads when you start it up and when you teleport to different parts of the city. Even then, the load times arent all that bad. Thus, you have one streaming experience of gameplay, no matter where you go throughout the city.

So what are you going to do, now that you have all these powers and no load times to stop you? Crackdown features three stereotypical gangs. Now, Grand Theft Auto also had gangs based on ethnic stereotypes, but they were done in a comedic fashion. When you go up against the Russian/Western European Volk gang, its just a bunch of white people with bad accents. Maybe jokes would have broken up the serious nature of Crackdown, but at least you would be assured that the stereotypes arent meant to be taken seriously. It also makes the gangs shallow and just simple targets.

Co-op is fun with another player and even allows you to be on entirely opposite parts of the map. However, problems arise with lag during most games, and only the host gets to keep his progression. So if you plan on playing through the entire game with a friend, the hosts save will have the completed game state, while the others will still be at the beginning.


The Mexican gang will shoot at you and yell Mexican things. Par for the course.



Crackdown can be conquered in a matter of days, thanks to your super powers and the fact that if you die, youre only given a slap on the wrist by being whisked away to the nearest save point and some of your skills knocked down a notch. After you beat the main story, there isnt much to do other than turning random crime on in the options and going about killing more mindless drones. I wish there were more side missions to do, or the possibility of turning evil and becoming the new mastermind of the three gangs. As it is, Crackdown will take you for a wild ride, but will it ultimately sit on your shelf gathering dust until the Halo 3 beta starts.
