Silent Hill: Downpour

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Release Date: March 13, 2012
Developers: Vatra
Publishers: Konami
Platforms: Xbox 360, Playstation 3
Genre: Third-Person Adventure
Players: Single-player
Rating (ESRB): M (Mature)

Synopsis:

Staying true to the franchise's original roots, this eighth installment of the Silent Hill franchise returns with an all new thought-provoking horror storyline. Players will once again find themselves face to face with their deepest sins and fears in the strange world of Silent Hill.

Synopsis Rating: 10

Gameplay/Story:

The storyline starts out with a man, whose name is Murphy Pendleton. He is being transferred to another prison by a bus. The bus starts to drive away and on the way to the destination, it heads near Silent Hill, a town of mystery and delusion. The bus crashes after the bus driver was distracted, Murphy being the only survivor or so he thinks. He has to escape Silent Hill, which takes him quite awhile. He goes through treacherous paths to get out of Silent Hill, by risking his life, numerous times. He eventually gets out after many hours of gameplay. The story was original and it did not interact with any of the other stories involved in the Silent Hill series. The gameplay was very fun, I could play this game for hours solving puzzles, killing monsters, and just doing the main quests.

Story Rating: 9.5

Graphics:

The graphics in this game were very realistic, sometimes I thought I was actually in the game. The graphics were very smooth, I had to take a look at everything before going onto the next objective, due to the amazing graphics.

Graphics Rating: 9

Controls:

The controls in this game were fairly easy to get used to. After you understand them, you can play the game like a master. They are fun to use, mainly because they're different. I didn't like the combat controls because I'm so used to tapping RT, rather than X, to swing an object. Other than that, the controls were easy and fun to use.

Controls Rating: 8.5

Silent Hill: Downpour is a very fun game if you are into horror games, it scares you and keeps you going. You won't get easily bored when playing this game at all. You wouldn't want to put down the controller, at all. The gameplay is addicting and it will keep you playing for hours without end.

Overall Rating: 9.8/10

Synopsis:

Vito Scaletta is an Sicilian immigrant who moved to the United States for his fathers work, but Vito encounters ongoing troubles as his pursuit for freedom rapidly expands to the grasp of the local Empire Bay community.

Story:

Vito Scaletta encounters trouble at a young age by getting caught during a smash and crash at a jewelry store. He is then drafted into the war in 1942 and is put on call overseas to Operation: Husky. Upon returning to the United States after being wounded in war, his childhood friend Joe helps him get released from the Army and begins to get Vito back into the normal life. They do small jobs for Joe Barbaro's old boss where Vito Scaletta is caught selling gas stamps illegally. Vito is sentenced to 10 years in a federal prison where he only serves 6 years and Joe, once again gets Joe out of a hard place. From that point off, Vito does jobs for Joe's gang.

Story Rating: 10/10

Gameplay

The gameplay itself is unreal, the action within each chapter of the game just are really mindblowing. You feel as if you are Vito and you are making these bad choices but never regretting them because your friend bails you out. The action is amazing, it is a third person shooter so its as if you are in the battle with you and your gang. Each cutscene after a chapter title ends is medium-long but you never get bored of them, I always picture myself standing right next to them or being in a theater since the animations are just key to the success of you in this story. Right when a cutscene ends you get let off to play right there where the cutscene ended and there are minimals interruptions and you learn extremely fast how to play the game. Even after a chapter is complete you can still just free roam the city and experience one-on-one what the freedom is really like. But be careful, the police are out there; but they are really dumb and you can just grand theft auto it out and change your clothes.

Gameplay Rating: 10/10

Graphics:

The graphics are fantastic for a game that was made before modern first-person graphics were created. The cutscenes have graphics that are so real you think you are watching a movie and the classic cars in the 1940's look like you are watching a car show. Actual gameplay as a third-person character is alright, though the could have really spiced up the colours a bit more and allowed all buildings to be enterable, but its fine.

Graphics Rating: 10/10

Controls:

The controls are just a little bit different from Grand Theft Auto, the reloading button and basic on-ground features are different but all moving with analogs, shooting and hopping over things are the same.

Controls Rating: 7/10

Extra Stuff:

Price: $25.99 @ GameStop

Overall Rating: 10/10 Even though I just bought this game about 3 days ago, it is honestly the best storyboard I have ever seen.

HALO REACH

Developer : Bungie
Composer's : Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori
Series : Halo
Release : 14/09/2011
Genre : First Person Shooting
Rating : PEGI 16

Halo means so much to so many people. This is not extraordinary in the culture of videogames. What's exceptional is how many different things it means to those players. For me Halo has always been a social experience, with lifelong friendships forged over a shared love of the game. Some hop online to randomly test their merit in competitive matches. Others find themselves lost in the fiction, playing through the campaign alone and then poring over the extended story in books and anime. Still others look to Halo for a creative outlet as level forgers or machinima producers. This range in how we play Halo is a testament to how feature-rich development studio Bungie has made the franchise, and Halo: Reach is the ultimate punctuation on a decade's work. For me Halo is not that good online but as they say whatever floats your boat

This is the end of the Halo road for Bungie -- the group is set to move on to a new original game next while Microsoft takes over responsibility for the franchise's future -- and that sense of this being a finale is in Halo: Reach. It shows clear reference to past games, refines well-established game mechanics, adds a few exciting twists, and polishes the rest to a glossy finish. The result is one of the most complete, fully-featured packages you'll find in gaming.

Little here will surprise the hardcore Halo fan, especially if they were among the millions that took part in the multiplayer beta earlier this year. The approach to making a first-person shooter remains the same as it has in the past for Halo. There's a co-op friendly campaign filled with the dreaded Covenant aliens, sparkling online competitive multiplayer, the four-player Firefight mode, and lots of flexibility to allow everyone to tweak settings to their liking. If you've played a Halo game in the past, you'll feel instantly at home.

That's not to say this is just another rehash. There's plenty of new and exciting content in Halo: Reach and it begins with the main character. Master Chief is out. This time you'll step into the shoes of Noble 6, a nameless hero for players to project themselves onto. Noble 6 doesn't even have a defined gender. Thanks to a deep new customization system, you're free to fit Noble 6's look to your personality

Noble 6's tale begins with an introduction to Planet Reach. This colony is the center of humanity's military might, and home to the Spartan program that produced Master Chief himself. The events of Halo: Reach take place as a prequel to the main Halo trilogy and -- though they take small liberties with the established fiction -- help to tell the story of the events that lead up to events of Halos 1 through 3. The war with the Covenant is already raging, and things don't look good for us humans.

Noble 6 is the rookie member of Noble Team, a squad of Spartans stationed on Reach. You'll get to know each of the other team members through the course of Halo: Reach as you work with them to complete various missions, but the action always follows Noble 6's adventure.

Flight Simulators seem to be a perfect fit for iOS. The accelerometer can offer one of the best control methods around for control over a flying machine when done correctly. But how about in a game thats recently become free-to-play? MetalStorm: Wingman attempts to do just this with a recent update that sees it lose its price tag.

Essentially what we have here is a combat flight simulator. Three game modes deliver some very different ways to play. First up is the campaign, with a series of set missions and objectives that come along with a brief narrative. Survival mode pits players against waves of enemies, either in single-player on co-operative online play. Then, theres the online multiplayer versus battles.

An unusual point here, though, is that even while playing single-player an online connection is required. Likely due to the way the game serves up advertisments at random points to allow for the game to remain free. But its a little frustrating when waiting around to connect if the signals not optimal.

Once connected, however, MetalStorm: Wingman offers some of the best combat flying Ive seen on the platform. The controls feel great using the accelerometer to steer, on-screen buttons to fire weapons and touch gestures to perform barrel-rolls and other evading manoeuvres each is highly responsive and a joy to use. It also looks real nice. 3D graphics and explosions are all very pretty, and the best-looking part is the rather beautiful and varied skies that fill the background.

The gameplay itself is great also. The campaign offers up varying objectives from dogfights to engaging ground targets, accompanied by introductory scenes with full dialogue. While the persistent levelling mechanic means that as one progresses through any of the games modes, XP is earned toward character levels and coins toward unlocking new upgrades and aircraft. These coins can also be bought via in-game purchases, for those that would rather take the easy option. But from what I can see, everything can be unlocked by just playing, even if its a rather slow process.

If this was a paid-for game, Id recommend that any aspiring virtual pilots went out and bought it. Its almost like a fully featured, mobile version of the HAWX games we see on consoles. The fact that its free, however, means it should certainly be trialled. Even if the always-online requirement can be a bit of a pain when not connected via Wi-Fi
