  • So are you going to be a AOD for a hospital or a nurse?
My father was the AOD for VA hospital for 4 years then became the head of transportation.

  • How many years of schooling do you have?
  • How many hours do you have to be watched in order to be left by yourself to attend a patient?

If someone was to start choking in the library right now, and the only thing you had was a can of beer and some corn, how would you save this man/woman's life?

I wanted mods but more importantly I wanted help with my capture card so I could record proof for a hoster to get my mods free! I ended up filming for a few hosters way back when and posting it for their youtube channels. They're somewhere out there when Xenon JTAGS running the first Konroi menus or something like that.

I knew I wanted to work in healthcare. My mom was diagnosed with stage 3B maximum invasive breast cancer so she went through chemotherapy and radiation. Thankfully she is in remission and getting blood work done monthly. I met a lot of people on that journey who are no longer with me today and it really impacted how I treat other people. I want to make their hospice care smooth and caring so I chose to do long-term care rather than becoming a doctor. I was originally Biology and Medicine.

What exactly is gerontology?

It's the study of the aging population. There is a lot to know about these old timers! With baby boomers reaching elderly ages studying them becomes crucial as we are going to have a LARGE population of elderly that all need care with already limited resources and funding.

I will receive my state licensure to become an LNHA (Licensed Nursing Home Administrator) in the next two years. With this I am eligible to become an administrator for both CBRFs and SNF. Hospitals typically require a masters degree which I will wait on as I can't take that much schooling... ICK! haha

4 years for the LNHA with 1 year being a practicum where you practice in an actual facility! Im applying to my facility this year.

Hours depend. To become a certified medication aide you need to first get your CNA. Those typically are 90 hours of learning in a class room. Medication Administration requires 90 hours of training as well, but this is mostly done outside of a classroom. You pretty much memorize a bunch of drugs, their side effects and what they do. On a typical day I pass about 1000 pills with about half of them being narcotics for pain and dementia. Alprazolam, Oxycodone, Pregabalin, you name it, I've passed it. It's really important to me to remember these as I once gave a blood thinner (warfarin) to a patient who was going to be operated on in 48 hours.... Blood thinner + Knives = No bueno.... But we got it all fixed by giving him an artificial coagulant!

Hours for the LNHA on the practicum is typically a 40-70 hour work week for 50 weeks training. Rough.

Lol the heimlich doesn't require either of those things, but I would drink the beer after to celebrate! I am certified for CPR, First Aid and AED and have had to resuscitate someone before! Multiple times actually, and it is quite sad when someone passes. I sometimes question myself if I did enough but it is something you live with and trust the EMTs and doctors knew what they were doing too!

I mean, it can get stressful, but if you are interested in it then it becomes easy. Imagine you loved learning about the stars. Its easy to sit and watch a 60 minute Nova narrated by Morgan Freeman. Now just take that idea and apply it to healthcare. Do you want to learn how to save someones life? Do you want to learn how to relieve someones pain with anti-psychotics or opioids like morphine? If that interests you then you shouldnt have a problem reading about it and doing it!
