I'm planning on buying an m.2 sad but I was wondering if it would be worth it in the first place. Currently I have a 256gb Samsung 840 evo and a 1tb hdd. If I were to get an m.2 ssd and install my os on it and used my 840 evo as storage for my favorite games and my 1tb hdd as my regular storage, would the m.2 boost the performance of the other drives or would it only boost the ssd. Also would it even be worth it to get an m.2 ssd or just stay with my current drives. If it's worth it, then what m.2 sad would you recommend that is worth its price tag, I don't need anything too big as I would only be installing my is on it. Thank you for your time!

M.2 is just a smaller form factor SSD.
The speed is based on the quality of the SSD, NOT the type of SSD.

If you plan to upgrade I'd do the Samsung 960 EVO M.2, you will see a performance increase.
It will not boost your other drives but it will allow you to use your 840 for more games.

Not necessarily. The vast majority of users wouldn't notice a difference between a 960 PRO and a basic SATA SSD. So it's a waste of money for most.

OP - m.2 is the form factor, like your 840 EVO is a 2.5" form factor. An m.2 SSD won't necessarily be faster than a 2.5". For example, Samsung 850 EVO comes in 2.5" and m/2 form factor, both will perform pretty much the same. A 960 EVO however, is an NVMe SSD as opposed to SATA, which is where the greatly increased speeds come from.

Whether or not you should get a new SSD, and if so, which SSD you should get depends entirely on how much storage you've currently used and what you use your system for exactly.

OP - I was in your shoes not so long ago. I too had a 250GB SSD and plenty of spinning rust. I picked up a 250GB 960 evo M.2 drive and saw no performance increase from my regular SSD. That doesn't mean it's a bad purchase though. I do like the form factor of the M.2.

In terms of speeding up other drives, the only drive that can do this ATM is [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] which isn't what you want anyway since your booting from your SSD anyway.
